Amid criticisms from fans - and even Hasnat Khan - Diana movie director has been forced to defend the film before its premiere in London tonight.

While producers are preparing for backlash from audiences following tonight's showing, director Oliver Hirschbiegel has already defended the film to Sky News saying, "the film is actually based on the accounts of several people, and the inquest in which there were hundreds of pages discussing their relationship."

The film, which centres around the 'greatest romance' between the former Princess (played by Naomi Watts) and Khan (played by Naveen Andrews), has been slammed by Khan himself when he told the The Mail on Sunday it has no solid foundation and is "based on gossip."

Diana fans have also taken to Twitter to express their upset over the film:

Despite the controversy surrounding the new film, we love a good love story so Diana is definitely on our 'must watch' list. Watch the trailer again to refresh your memory...

The chance to relive Diana's elegant fashion sense is as good a reason as any to watch the new release, in cinemas 20th September, will you be buying a ticket?
