The singer's overly sexed performance bagged her 306,000 tweets a minute and received 4.5 million mentions between 9pm-11pm of the show's airing in the US.
Tweets per minute are calculated by how many hashtags and keywords related to a particular event are mentioned on Twitter. To put it in perspective, February's Super Bowl blackout drama peaked at 231,000 tweets per minute and the arrival of Prince George caused 25,300 tweets per minute and two million mentions.
Andy Murray winning at Wimbledon caused 120,000 tweets per minute, however, Miley is just shy of the 327,452 tweets per minute frenzy after Obama was re-elected into the White House.
Love it or hate it, Miley's foam finger antics prove there's no such thing as bad publicity, a fact the singer is all too aware of...
Smilers! My VMA performance had 306.000 tweets per minute. That's more than the blackout or Superbowl! #fact.— Miley Ray Cyrus (@MileyCyrus) August 26, 2013
Justin Timberlake managed to rack up 2.9 million mentions during the show, and had 219,800 tweets per minute and Taylor Swift's acceptance speech managed to score 189,300 tweets per minute for her Harry Styles diss.
Lady Gaga racked up 1.9 million mentions for her shell bikini and Kanye West bagged 1 million mentions.
Here's a couple of our favourites from the night (with a special nod going to James Van Der Beek. Fine work sir.)
