David Cameron has defended the Duchess of Cambridge after author Hilary Mantel called her a 'shop-window mannequin, with no personality of her own.'

The Prime Minister commented that Mantel, 'writes great books' but 'what she's said about Kate Middleton is completely misguided'.

The rebuttal comes after the Wolf Hall author said the Duchess was a 'machine-made' princess, 'designed by committee' in a lecture on Royal women, where she compared Kate to Anne Boleyn.

Mr Cameron continued, 'What I've seen of Princess Kate at public events, at the Olympics and elsewhere is this is someone who's bright, who's engaging, who's a fantastic ambassador for Britain.'

'We should be proud of that, rather than make these rather misguided remarks,' he added.

The pregnant Duchess made her first public appearance yesterday after a stressful few weeks having also been papped in her bikini on a private island.
