What's the film about?

Based on the hugely popular book series, Beautiful Creatures follows Southern boy Ethan Wate, who's whole world is turned upside down with the arrival of the mysterious Lena Duchannes.

It soon becomes clear that Lena and her family possesses strange powers but Lena and Ethan are drawn together by fate.

Their romance is threatened by the dangers posed by Lena's being a Caster and her family's Dark powers because on her sixteenth birthday Lena must undergo the Claiming, a process that will decide her fate forever: Light or Dark.

Who's in it? Alice Englert, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum and Alden Ehrenreich

Handbag hearts:

It's all about girl power! So many of these fantasy teen romance flicks have the girl all vulnerable and incapable of protecting herself and then comes Lena Duchannes.

She's powerful, determined and our kinda girl! We love Alice Englert after seeing her in Ginger and Rosa so we are happy to see her in a big franchise like this.

We also love Alden Enrenreich as "nice guy" Ethan Wate. Finally a male lead who isn't a jerk at first, doesn't play hard to get or the usual teen boy stereotypes.

While he may not be Robert Pattinson, he has definitely got a charm that will make us keep our eye out for his future work.

We have to say Emmy Rossum is the highlight of this flick as she embraces her sexy bad girl role with ease while Emma Thompson seems to have had a ball playing big bad caster Sarafine.

Complaints:

There have been a few changes to the book that work well enough but might not go down very well with die-hard fans of the books. And some slightly poor CGi scenes do break the spell just a little bit at times.

We're not sure why Ethan's dad is completely AWOL in the film either, we can only guess that there wasn't time to add that aspect of the story into the flick!

Verdict: Beautiful Creatures does its best but it doesn't quite fill the vampire shaped hole in our hearts.

P.S. We totes want to start talking with a southern accent. Sounds so fun!

Beautiful Creatures is out in cinemas from 13 February 2013.
