It might be an honour when your friend asks you to be their bridesmaid, but chances are you'll be giving up more than just your time.

According to a new survey by YouGov, agreeing to be a bridesmaid or maid of honour will set you back £732. That's not throughout your lifetime, that's just for one wedding!

The findings also showed that the average Brit spent over £750 in 2012 attending weddings; from buying clothes and booking plush hotel rooms to splashing out on expensive gifts and paying for booze.

Unsurprisingly, the men in our lives seem to get the better end of the deal with their best man spend totalling £625.

The survey, which was commissioned to celebrate the DVD release of wedding day rom-com, The Knot, showed that couples over 55 spend £500 more than younger generations, parting with nearly £2000 per year.

Overall, Southerners will cough up more for a wedding than Northerners, but it's those in the East who manage to spend the least. Still, £200 per wedding doesn't sound so cheap when you're attending three every summer!
