Erotic novels are more popular than award winning literature according to a new report from Rakuten's Play.com.
Books like Fifty Shades of Grey and Bared to You have received 4,000% more searches that titles from the Man Booker Prize Shortlist, which recognises excellence in storytelling and language.
Although the quality of the writing in erotic novels has often been questioned, sexy stories account for 14% of all books sold on Play.com, whereas prize winning tomes account for only 0.4% of all books sold.
Now that everyone has consumed Fifty Shades, readers are turning to Sylvia Day's Bared to You and Reflected in You, which account for 36% of all erotic book sales.
But don't let these stats fool you...Fifty Shades still receives 100,000 hits per week on the entertainment site!
Adam Stewart, Marketing Director at Rakuten's Play.com, said, "Although we weren't surprised to see an increase in sales of erotic fiction on the site, we were shocked at how much they are outselling award-winning novels such as Hilary Mantel's Bring up the Bodies."
