American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
Published in 1991, American Psycho centres on Patrick Bateman, a serial killer and Manhattan businessman who openly jokes about his passion for dismembering women in front of his co-workers. What makes Patrick so scary is his unpredictability - you never know if he likes someone, hates them or wants to kill them with an axe!
The book was adapted into a film with Christian Bale back in 2000. It's left up to the audience to decide whether Patrick is a crazed serial killer or a delusional psychopath imagining cutting his colleagues to shreds. Truly terrifying...
The Shining - Stephen King
Jack Torrence and his family move into an isolated hotel in the middle of winter, but his raging temper soon disrupts the fragile family dynamic. His son, Danny, has telepathic abilities and he soon senses the evil forces that have taken over the hotel. What follows is a chilling downfall into madness and murder...but who will get out alive?
The Shining was Stephen King's third novel published in 1977 and it was made into a hugely popular film in 1980. Have a peek at the trailer below...
Red Dragon - Thomas Harris
This was the first novel to feature the evil Hannibal Lector - the brilliant psychiatrist and crazed cannibalistic serial killer. The FBI are struggling to catch a mysterious murderer known as the Tooth Fairy so they call on the help of Hannibal (who's in prison) for help. It's creepy, tense and will make you see your house in a completely different light...
Dracula - Bram Stoker
Written in 1897, Dracula follows a doomed vampire who chooses to move from him home in Transylvania to England. The book won't make you scream, but there's something eerie and dark about the whole tale. You won't get it out of your head for weeks...
Rosemary's Baby – Ira Levin
The book centres on Rosemary Woodhouse, a young woman who has just moved into an old Gothic-style New York City apartment. Strange things have happened in the building in the past, but she chooses to overlook this...until she discovers her neighbours are leaders of a Satanic Coven.
It's weird, but there's something so sinister about their intentions for poor Rosemary that you start to get chills. Take a look at the trailer for the movie adaptation below...
I am Legend – Richard Matheson
Most people are familiar with the film of the same name starring Will Smith, but the original book, written in 1954, is just as scary. Robert Neville is one of a handful of survivors of a deadly disease that has tuned normal people into zombie-style killing machines.
What really makes this book frightening is the loneliness that Robert has to go through, plus the constant fear, scavenging and hopelessness. You end up being more frightened by the prospect of being alone than being attacked by zombies!
