Forgetting Sarah Marshall star Russell Brand has said he was "devastated by the possibility that he may have offended vulnerable people" after being criticised for calling a police helpline during an onstage performance.

The comedian was performing in Northampton and rang a hotline set up by police in response to a number of recent attacks on women in city.

Russell said he had seen the man that police believe is responsible. The police employee eventually ended the call after he asked her out to dinner and sang to her.

Northamptonshire Police are yet to confirm if any action will be taken against him but a spokesman said the force would "discourage" any communication with police hotlines which was not genuine.
