Not because he actively remained a flabbergasted spectator of the conversation, and not because he came only to antagonise, ridicule and exert his superiority. No, Paxman failed miserably because apparently, there's no argument Russell can't win.
Have you ever seen him loose? Appear lost for words? Nah-uh.
In the face of Paxman's squinty-eyed scepticism (Russell's the new guest editor of political mag New Statesman you know), the comedian drew on that genius ability to string so many words into an elegantly complex sentence, that you fall happily into mesmerisation.
For example, "It is not that I am not voting out of apathy. I am not voting out of absolute indifference and weariness and exhaustion from the lies, treachery and deceit of the political class that has been going on for generations."
This has of course sent our minds hurtling back into the Russell Brand archives however.
