Subject: Been doing all the wrong things
Hi everyone

I've just found out I'm pregnant (17 days gone) which I would be happy about but am worried I have already damaged my baby. Since conception I have dyed my hair, had alcohol and caffeine and inhaled loads of paint fumes through decorating my house and have been taking cod liver oil capsules. I know I'm an idiot as we were trying to get pregnant but I really didn't think it would happen so soon.

Please can anyone tell me if these things have an effect on the baby this early on?

Thank you

xxx

There is nothing you've said that would give me cause for concern. I know it's easy to think differently but well established embryos are quite robost little things..

You haven't done anything please try and relax.. if you're still worried then have a chat with your midwife so she can put your mind at ease.

Congratulations.. hope you have a very boring 9 months

Hi THEREALDEAL

Thank you for replying and for being so kind.

I've calmed down a bit now and am feeling a lot better. I've been reading up on what happens in the first weeks after conception and am hoping that the baby wouldn't have been taking on much of what was in my blood at that point.

From now on I'm going to be super careful and fingers crossed it will all be ok.

My children are in their thirties now. When I was pregnant there weren't early pregnancy tests like there are now. I think the doctor did a test when you'd missed two periods, so by then I'd done all sorts of things that weren't recommended in pregnancy, plus there are all sorts of things that we didn't know could be dangerous, such as soft cheeses , pate etc.. We were even told we should eat liver three times a week!
I hope this has put things into perspective for you....and by the way, Congratulations! You're growing a little human!

plus, just think how many people get preggars and don't know it and go out drinking. I might have done this myself - I'm pretty sure my son was pickled in vodka for the first month of my pregnancy but he's completely fine. Plus, I ate tons of seafood and stuff. Stop stressing about it and relax and am sure bubba will be just perfect.

Congratulations too, it's terribly exciting, so enjoy it.

Hey hun, i only found out i was pregnant when i was about 4/5weeks gone and had the same worries as you as i had been drinking heavily and regularly, smoking frequently and eating very little in that time. I was not trying for a baby so it came as a big shock and i too felt worried and also very guilty for thosse firts few weeks, but the most you can do is do the best you can for your baby now you do know. Do not worry constantly and punish yourself, and remember some people continue to do such things throughout pregnancy. I am sure everything will be fine and the fact you have shown so much concern proves how much you love your baby and i think you will be a great mum. I am now about 8 weeks myself and have been looking after myself as best as possible, n that's all we can do Good luck xxx

Well, don't blame yourself as you didn't know that time. Now you know, you should live a healthier lifestyle.
