My little moggy is 19 years old and in the last few months you can clearly see she's aged dramatically. She has arthiritis and had lost weight but she was plodding along happily until the last couple of weeks. She hasn't been eating well, she's had diorrhea and at night she keeps weeing in the corner of the hallway and not in her litter trays.

So we took her to the vets earlier this evening to see what he said and he thinks she might have cancer in her intestines. She's got to go back tomorrow morning where they're going to x-ray her and have a better look but its looking likely that they'll let her go whilst under anaesthetic which I completely understand because she's old and I don't want her to be unhappy.

But I'm absolutely devastated. I wish so much that she could've gone in her sleep at home. She bloody hates our vet as well, she always poos on the table and attacks him. I don't want her last moments to be like that. Well actually saying that, she is a right evil monster so maybe going out fighting is quite fitting.

I really feel for you, having had two cats put to sleep in the last three years, and now dreading the time we have to say goodbye to dear old Izzy, who is also 19.

To be honest, though,as your cat is so old, I'd be thinking what is the point of the xray, apart from to give the vet more money. Perhaps it's time to allow her the dignity of slipping away quickly. I know it's hard, but I think you know that this is probably the end. I'm so so sorry.

Oh Knees I'm sorry to hear that, I know how you feel, it's like losing a member of the family.
If you can spare her the trauma of the vets, that would be kinder but I'm sure there's some moggy justice in going out fighting!
Lots of love
xx

Aaaah knees, my condolences. I lost my beautiful tabby earlier this year, in a similar way i.e. by eunthanaisa at the vets when i really just wanted him to die at home cuddled up in his blanket.

I hope she goes peacefully and that you are ok...x

Thanks everyone!

I don't really see the point in the x-ray and the like either. She's old and frail so probably won't make it through that let alone an operation if she does have cancer.
I think we're just going to tell the vet to put her sleep tomorrow, there is no point in prolonging anything. We knew this was coming and you can tell she's not very happy. It's just sad because when we put my other cat to sleep I had her to come home to and cuddle.

Stubborn little mule she is, hanging on. Going to miss the little bugger, no matter how many times she's bitten or clawed me.

Sorry to read this Knees, its heartbreaking losing pets. She sounds like a right character, and the grand old age of 19 is good for cats. Thinking of you, x

Hi Knees, I'm glad you've decided to do this last kind thing for her, but I'm so sorry that you have to. Will be thinking of you.

Well, my parents took her up this morning to do the deed. I couldn't face going with them so said my goodbyes at home, god her little face, covered in cat food as usual. She knew something was up, kept giving everyone dirty looks especially when the cat carrier came out of hiding.

I haven't been able to look at her yet, she's wrapped in the blanket for when my dad gets home so we can bury her in the garden. It's going to be so odd, every time I walked in the front door I'll call her name even though she was deaf and go give her a tickle.

Oh well, she had a good (spoilt) life, we got her at 8 weeks I think, she was the leftover runt and I swear she had 'runt syndrome' meaning she made up for it in feistyness and attitude.

Thanks again everyone for being kind.
