Subject: Stray cat with leg injury
Hi, I'm just after some advice about a possible stray cat in my area. He is holding his front left leg and wont put any weight on it. I can see a cut on his leg which he keeps licking. I can't be sure if he is a stray but going by his condition, he must be. I have tried knocking on doors but nobody knows who owns him.

Just a bit of background. He has been roaming around for about 9 months, he looks very tatty / matted and underweight. I started leaving food outside and very gradually, he allowed me to get close enough to stroke him although he is still very nervous. I hadn't seen him for about a week and then he appeared 2 days ago with this leg injury.

I tried to gently pick him up last night to have a better look but he struggled and backed off. Gentle strokes are as far as it goes at the moment!

I'm really not sure what to do about this and it's awful seeing him in discomfort. If I call the RSPCA, they will probably want to try to catch him and perhaps try to re-home him, although, he may belong to someone. I just don't know!

If anyone has advice, it would be a great help.

Thanks x

Hi CamillePink.

I think probably the RSPCA is the best idea. If he does belong to someone then hopefully they will have him microchipped. Although, by the sounds of things he probably is a stray.

Fingers crossed they will find him and get him to a vets, poor soul. He is lucky to have someone who cares enough to feed him and worry about his welfare.

Give them a call and see what they say.

Personally I would be inclined to capture it and take it to my local vet, who I seem to have astanin order with -) Whilst letting the RSPCA know so as they could pick it up once treated.

If you do call the RSPCA and want them to take it on do consider their resourcing and if you can ask them for which duty vet to take it too. You will ned to capture it in most cases anyway as the RSPCA are stretched and don't have the resources this time of year that they normally have (well they do have the numbers but they will be busy with young wildlife).

To capture it, if it cannot be handled use a box or cage to feed it in and just shut it in when it is feeding. I have a mid sized dog cage that I use or Harvey and this does well for catching injured critters.

Thank you Moggy & Sealy Fella.

I think i was just after someone else's thoughts on this, just to be certain I wasn't getting my knickers in a twist about nothing.

When he arrived yesterday afternoon, he was putting weight on his leg although, he is still limping and holding it. The cut is looking much better as well which is good news. He was already waiting by the side door for his breakfast this morning so I couldn't see him walking but i'll see how he is tonight when i get home. If there's no change, i'll give the local Cats Protection a ring and take it from there.

Thanks again for your help and advice )
