Subject: Dog cries at night
Hi,

Help! My dog cries each night to come in our bedroom. She gets up any time between 2am and 4am, then scratches at our bedroom door/tries to open it. It's quite disruptive as she wines and cries for about 1-2hours. It's been all this week - we were away and a friend looked after her last week.

My dog is quite small and loves people, so I think she is upset about not being with us. She's 6 years old, so not like she's new or anything, we've been living in our house about 6 months. She's gone from sleeping in our room, to sleeping downstairs, but she got up every morning at 5am to come and wake us. So, recently we've moved her into the spare room (upstairs) which is quieter than downstairs as it's at the back of the house.

If you have any ideas, they'd be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Our dog started a similar kind of behavour about 3 months ago, completely out of the blue and at the time I researched it online, apparently a lot of dogs do it, as with me they were all saying that they walked their dog regularly, played with them, they ate well and were happy so I am hoping it is just a phase, gradually he came out of it and although he is a lot better he still scratches/digs at the rug in night but they say that is a nesting thing and to put a rug down.

Hi, I experienced the same thing a few months ago Our dog still cries whenever we leave the house or when he's left outside of our room. That is why I let him in our room but I never let him sleep in the bed because he will get used to it, as mush as I love my dog I don't want dog hair on my sheets.

It is best if you spend time with your dog and if it's possible let him or her inside your room:)

If anyone can give any advice on how to quieten/settle a puppy down, it is only our 3rd night of broken sleep, but he is crying and howling for longer periods through the night. He only came home on Monday, so I know it may take a while, but any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds cruel, but I think the best thing to do is ignore them. If you get up and comfort them, then they'll just associate you fussing them with crying, so they'll do it even more.

Have you considered getting a crate / cage for him? It sounds almost barbaric, I know (I hated the idea with mine to start with) but after a while they seem happy to know it's their space and it seems to comfort them in the night. (Of course, in my girls' case the treats when they get in their crates and the bones to chew if they want might have something to do with it!)
