Subject: My cats fetish for bats
I spent most of Thurs night trying to get the bat that my cat brought in out of the window. This is the second one he's brought in only the last one died. This one was flying round my hall landing and bedroom for 2 hours.

I'm ashamed to say we were all like a load of screaming banshees here which didn't help the situation. There wasn't anywhere for it to land really and it only landed on the window sill a few times because the poor thing was getting knackered.

I had a towel ready to put over it which is what someone suggested last time but I couldn't get the chance I needed to use it. It did eventually go out of the window but I want to avoid that again if possible. What's the best way to catch a live bat without hurting it so you can put it outside. We're not supposed to handle them are we but what else can you do?

Argh be very very careful with bats they can carry rabies!!! Make sure your cat has had his shots or whatever it is or he could end up with it too.

Does your cat have a bell on its collar? The RSPB recommends attaching bells to cats to prevent them from murdering small creatures.

My cat bought one in once and it totally freaked me out - I just grabbed all the stuff I needed for work, shut the door and left it in there! Eventually I arranged for a friend to come over, put it in a box and take it away to be released (after ringing the bat protection people for their advice).

You are allowed to handle them but they are protected, so you can't kill them (not that this was even considered, in my case!)

Here is their website, there's a number you can ring if you need to.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I've now put the Bat Conservation Trust number in my phone list. I thought I'd read up on rabies anyway and then cack myself like you do but my cat has his shots every year and there doesn't seem to be a lot else I can do to stop the little bugger. I'll have a quick word with the vet when I go to get him some more worming tablets on Monday.

I wasn't sure where he was finding them because I always thought they liked to be in an enclosed area but it seems he's getting them from a tree in the field at the back of us

Poor things, they're cute little creatures, far too delicate and interesting for him to be playing with though. I'm sure the cat thinks they're the ones we like him to bring us best due to all the screaming. He's such a git.

We do have rabies in England lol just not among domestic animals. Bats are known to carry it.
