Hi, I feel a little churlish posting this, seeing as quite a few of you are suffering from pets illnesses.....but maybe some advice and/or some home truths are required.
I got my first cat about three weeks ago, my first pet in fact. The neighbour didn't want her anymore and the cat and I always shared a cuddle/stroke every day as she likes my steps up to my flat.
It's great and all that but I'm beginning to feel like a human vending machine, dishing out a meal twice a day. I know that the previous owner didn't play with the cat, and I've read many books on cat behaviour and I've been trying so hard to ensure that the cat gets my attention as much as I can afford. The flat is full of toys/catnip/scratching post but she rarely wants to play and if she does, it's with a tatty piece of string!
Any advice? I love her dearly and can't imagine life without her now but surely she's gotta be interested in other things other than food?
BTW, I feed her one pouch of Felix in the morning and another pouch in the evening, so I don't think I'm under-feeding her.......?

How old is the cat Vicky?

I have a cat - the villain cat Brian - who is somewhere between 4 and 7 who does absolutely nothing all day long expect eat his breakfast, then sleep on my bed all bloody day. I've given up on toys, but he will very occasionally scratch his post.

I think cat characters vary enormously, and your furbaby sounds like he is one of the chilled out ones.

I really wouldn't worry about it... he would let you know if he was unhappy I'm sure.

My cat's lazy too.

He's about 6ish and he's quite a big cat (weighs about a stone but isn't fat!) and we feed him one whiska's pouch and a handful of dry biscuits in the morning and another handful of dry biscuits in the evening.

He does very little and has even killed the grass in our garden by sitting in exactly the same spot each day sunbathing. When he's in the house he sleeps. For 10/15mins in the evening he go crazy, running around chasing imaginary flies and then collapses and continues his regular sleeping pattern!

She sounds like a regular cat to me

How many of us have brought pricey toys or scratching posts for the cats and the cats preferred the wrapping or the sofa arm......
Just what they do really !
Two pouches a day is adequate, do try to vary the diet though. Also make sure he is wormed regularly, because that might make hi feel hungry too.

Thanks for your replies, you've given me reassurance that I'm not being a boring 'mum'.

I'm not sure how old she is, the previous owner couldn't tell me that, nor tell me about when she was last wormed or flea treated. I gave her a worming tablet last week (cunningly disguised as a lump of tuna) and Sunday I put the flea liquid on her neck so she's protected from those too.

I won't push the playing too much then, and just make sure she gets to play with the string every day. Just enjoy her company and ensure the meals differ each day.

Thanks again.

Your cat sounds perfectly normal. My boy cat was the laziest bum ever, he'd be happy sitting in his spot under the table or on my lap getting a belly rub and ate like a horse.

My girl cat would be happy if you gave her a piece of paper to play with or simply chasing you around the house trying to bite your ankles. And like kitty boo's cat, every so often, you'd hear her thundering around upstairs going crazy for 5 minutes then go back to sleep.

I wouldn't bother buying cat toys when there are so many things around the house that make great toys, like a bit of string.

Our old cat, Blackie did nothing. that's it. he didn't play, he wasn't affectionate, he didn't purr, he didn't like people except me, took on a german shepard and won lol. He was happy, he got fed, he got a makeshift greenhouse to sleep in outside. he lived until he was about 14!!!

My kitten Charlie is 5 months old and when he's not sleeping he runs laps round the room, plays with cotton buds, on the attack constantly, jumping, running, climbing.

Cats seems to vary personality wise as my two experiences display so i wouldn't worry about it
