I'm getting a little dumbo rat in 6 weeks time. Never had a rat before, always mice so I can't wait.
I'm just looking for any advice at all on them. Is there any difference in temperament between the sexes? I've read that males are more placid? Also I was wondering about the size of cage to get. I want to get a good sized cage but as it will be in the sitting room where space is a bit limited I can't have it too big. I like the look and size of the Jenny rat cage in Petsathome but its a little too expensive. I've seen some chinchilla cages on ebay which were bigger but cheaper, but I think they might be too big. I've also seen this one http://www.ukpetsupplies.com/Details.aspx?ProdId=2966&ParentId=179 but it looks a bit boring and I'm not sure there is actually enough space to put in little toys and a bed. Any advice welcome.

I don't have rats anymore but I used to keep them a few years back. They are lovely pets, you won't regret getting one 
I had 2 males and a female and there wasn't a lot of difference in their temperament. The males were lazier so I suppose easier to handle but my female was so tame she'd sit on my shoulder whilst I walked around the house, I loved her to bits. I doubt it was related but she lived longer than the boys too.
Cagewise it depends on how often you are planning on letting it out. Mine weren't in huge cages but they were out for a vast majority of the day so they didn't need huge living space as they mainly were there to eat and sleep. If you aren't planning on letting it out loads though a bigger cage would be more ideal
