Subject: anyone know how much nhs tests cost?
I want to have a full blood count and a physical but I think I need to pay for it because it's more for my piece of mind than them feeling the need to do it. Was just wondering before I make an appointment with my doc whether anyone has asked for a physical/full blood count on the nhs before and happens to know how much it costs?
Thanks if anyone knows!

I dont think it would cost anything littlelau, since you pay for the nhs really through tax. I got a full blood count thing and thyroid check about a couple of weeks ago because I told them I was feeling tired and it came back clear. I think they are happy to help...hopefullyl ol x

Aren't you entitled to get this done once a year over there free. Here everything can be checked yearly free, skin, blood the lot, unless you have a medical condition then it can be done free more often, cos I parted company with my spleen I am supposed to go twice yearly (must be joking). You all pay a fortune over there in contributions anyway it's a cheek that you don't get anything back!!! shoot Gordon Brown & the other fat cats & don't wait til dawn....

Because I've been losing weight unintentionally for the past 6 months, was going to get the tests done to rule out physical problems. I've always had cold hands and feet and I just assumed it was poor circulation but when I got my work flu jab the nurse felt my hand and asked if I had thyroid problems. I have since found out my nan has an underactive thyroid and gets cold hands and feet as well. I've looked up the symptoms and I've had a few over the years for underactive, around the same time I developed IBS symtoms as well which apparently can happen alongside thyroid problems, however it still doesn't explain the weight loss.
I'm usually too busy to see the doctor or I make excuses not to make an appointment because the doctor I last saw was quite dismissive so I feel like I should be putting off seeing the doctor until I absolutely have to. Plus I think the weight loss is mainly my fault through stress and not eating enough so I can't really use that as a reason. I finally have some time off next week, enough to see a doctor at least but now I'm thinking I have no reason to see them and should try eating my 5 a day and see if I can make the problem go away myself.
I should make an appointment really but I keep putting it off.
Thanks for your replies, guys. I thought the blood test would cost money because when I was on my course and they were teaching us about it, they said you can request it for a fee.

sounds like you have good reason to have the tests and should get them for free just to rule anything out - you can request them and you should if you have concerns - dont be paying, you already pay through stamp duty

Ok I've just made an appointment, don't know why but thought I'd be asked why I wanted one when I was booking it but it was easier than I thought it would be. I think I just wanted some validation that I wasn't overreacting. When I talk to my family about health issues they think I'm being silly and tell me not to worry so I avoid going to the doctor and end up worrying myself instead. I know that if anyone else ever asked me about the same problems I would tell them to go to the doctor though! Always easier to give advice than it is to listen to your own!

if you want something checking, get it checked. your family arent doctors and it was a nurse who asked you about your thyroid, you arent being paranoid youre being thorough
theres prob nothing to worry about, but you have to be sure lau - well done making the appointment
