Subject: Anyone a Vegan?
Hi All!

I'm swithering about becoming a Vegan, I'm already veggie and have been for years, but think I'd like to give it a try to see how I get on.

I've not cooked Vegan before and I'm pretty clueless about nice meals, snack ideas, breakfasts and lunches, so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I'm going to try and stop myself relying on wholewheat pasta etc and try and experiment more with pulses, vegetable dishes etc.

Any ideas to get me started?

I assumed Wholewheat pasta would be Vegan? Isn't this the case?

See, I really know nothing yet!

Me too, chocolate and ice-cream! I've been doing a lot of reading tonight and apparently there are quite a few different brands of Vegan chocolate and ice-cream, I think I'll be taking a trip to Holland and Barrett at the weekend to see what they have. And I've noted some Vegan reciptes down tonight from the BBC website for chocolate cake and desserts etc. It might sound silly, but it's quite important to me to be able to have things like this, because I enjoy it and I don't want to feel deprived then not stick with it!

Another idea, if you were in an OK position to do it, would be to get some pet hens. There's no cruelty in it - they lay spontaneously when they're not breeding, and if you don't get a cockerel the eggs won't be fertilised - so you could still eat egg products and you would know they came from happy, well-kept animals. It would also be a useful source of protein, since you're a vegetarian.

I used to have chickens and I absolutely loved them, great pets, everyone should have some It's also a great feeling to know you're not supporting cruel, industrialised farming methods.

My ex-flatmate was vegetarian for a number of years and decided to go vegan. She kept it up for about a year but missed eggs too much.

One of the worst things for her was that eating out was virtually impossible. Most vegetarian options are cheese or cream based (like veg lasagne or goat's cheese tartlets etc) so her only choices would often be a side salad or chips. And she hated that.

Bear in mind that Quorn is made with milk and egg so you would have to switch to Tofu or dried soya protein.

As long as pasta isn't made with egg, it's suitable for vegans. One of the nicest things my vegan friend used to make was to roast lots of vegetables such as peppers, aubergines, courgettes, mushrooms, onions, carrots etc (in olive oil with some herbs), then mix in a can of chopped tomatoes and serve with pasta. Yummy! You could add soy protein if you wanted to.
