You do not need a portfolio if the agency is reputable: if they start asking for one, or demand hefty upfront fees to do one for you, steer clear. An agency will normally look at you and measure you, and, if you're what they're looking for, will then do some test shots (usually in the form of polaroids) to see how you photograph, before taking you on their books. Sometimes they will arrange a bigger shoot and a casting card; this is usually paid for as a percentage of your first few pay cheques. Couple of words of warning: modelling seems glam but there are SO many models out there and it is highly competitive and very tough. My friend modeled during her gap year; she is stunning, was with a top London agency, and is a good model. She made just 14k in over 12 months. Your days will be spent trekking to casting after casting, and you can expect to get maybe 1 job in every 10-20 catsings you go to. Agencies take a hefty cut, usually 30% of what you earn. It's a massive money-spinning business and often agencies will take you on even if they don't think you'll do particularly well, as it costs them little to have a model on their books, and the more models they have, the more chances for making money they have (if that makes sense). I'm not trying to put you off, just giving you a clearer picture as a lot of people think jobs land at your feet and you spend your time getting pampered; not so, it's hard work.
