Subject: Baby falling asleep during feeds....
Anyone else finding it difficult to get their little one to keep awake during feeds. Mine sometimes only manages 10 minutes if that - and at night its hard because a 10 minute feed isnt going to keep him satisfied long enough for him to get a good few hours sleep in, or his mummy!!
Anyone got any tips on keeping him awake long enough to get a decent feed down him.I have tried blowing on his face, playing with his feet, and I do sometimes change his nappy halfway through to keep him awake but he hates having his nappy changed - any other tips that anyone has tried and tested?

Oh we had this problem, and tried all the same things - sometimes they worked and sometimes they didn't. Trying to keep him cooler when being fed worked quite well sometimes too. We quite quickly gave up on the bedtime feed though, and gave him a bottle at this time. (Sometimes EBM, sometimes formula) He found that much easier so he took a better quantity, slept better and then fed better the following day. He was quite happy to breastfeed the rest of the time though.

I strip Ilana to her nappy for this feed which sometimes helps... Winding her and sitting her up sometimes helps, as does opening her mouth and poking my boob in! But sometimes the girl will not be woken. Stubborn buggars, babies.

I expressed some breast milk for the first time this afternoon, and bottle fed him it and it went really well, so tonight going to do this again and night feeds are going to be done by bottle from now on because it was so quick and easy and I can see what he is doing. Also I dont intend on doing breast feeding forever and a day so it will get him used to a bottle, so its going to come in handy in the future. Lets hope he can keep his eyes open for 10 minutes so I can get a bottle down him. Law unto hisself!!

Mia usually falls to sleep after draining the 1st boob I give her. But after taking her to a bright room for her nappy to be changed, wakes her up. If she then goes back to sleep very quickly after the 2nd boob is popped in, I usually just put her down to sleep again. I cant see the point in trying to rouse her from such a deep sleep, nothing can wake her up I find so I just resign myself to having done a short feed. She always makes up for it on her next feed, so it's not something that overly concerns me.

We had this problem with the twins when they were first born as they were early so kept falling asleep. We tried all of the above suggestions. Another that worked for us is to position your finger under their chin behind the chin bone and apply a tiny bit of pressure. It reminds them that they are supposed to be doing something and they start sucking again. We were shown this by one of the SCBU nurses and it worked sometimes.

Like Stickle, I wouldn't worry if your baby is gaining weight. Finley only feeds for ten minutes, sometimes he'll fall alseep and other times he comes off himself - ten minutes is all he wants. I wouldn't worry about trying to extend his feeds, this will come naturally.
Edited to add that now at twelve weeks Finley only wakes the once during the night having fallen asleep at about 9pm and wakes at around 8am and this is all on his ten minute feeds.

I had this problem with my youngest.....my midwife advised to massage quite hard on the side on the jaw (imagine the "hinge" of the jaw, near the ear) in a firm circular motion to encourage suckling - it worked!!
