Subject: When to move little one into their own room.
Hi ladies - my first post in baby - did dip into the pregnancy & birth forum before my LO was born.
Fred is 5 weeks old now - he is relatively good at night & tends to have a last feed at 9.30pm before waking around 1/2am & again about 5/6am.
However he can be incredibly noisy in the night even when he is settled & asleep just snuffling, squeaking etc which doesn't help me when I'm trying to get back to sleep! When did you put your baby in his/her own room?
I'm just nervous I won't hear him when he wakes up - his nursery is next door to our room but we would have to have our door & his shut as we have cats who are about the house at night. He doesn't cry at the moment when he wakes in the night - just grizzles slightly & makes sucking noises on his hands. Also up till now he has been settled to sleep being cuddled/ on my shoulder - I'm guessing I'm getting him into bad habits, but if I put him down awake he won't settle at the mo.
Any advice please?

It's a personal choice that one.. it takes me a few years to get there lol.

If you think he'll do better in his own room then put him in.. just get a baby monitor that doesn't give a lot of background noise off (some are unbelivebly irritating when just on) so you can hear him if he wakes up.

Personally I would wait until they are rolling over by themselves.. little babys adjust their breathing to match whoever is sleeping in the same room as them which can be reassuring.

Also don't worry about how you get him to sleep at the minute.. when they are tiny it's however you can and what works. I think I bearly put my youngest down at all for the first 16 weeks.

Hi Poble,

I think they reccomend keeping the baby with you for the first 6 months but I know lots of people who didn't last that long for various reasons. We moved Lauren out at 6 months and 1 week though I think we would have like to keep her with us for allot longer.

I also held / fed her to sleep which is causing a few problems now but she is allot older than your bub. I think it is importnant to put them down awake but not when they're so small. Cuddle away

MrS wanted to put Mia in her own room at 6 months. Well weeks of sleep deprivation put paid to that LOL and she got moved into her own room at 6 weeks I think. She didnt even realise she'd been moved and slept exactly the same hours. We sleep with the doors open and with her being in her own room, I dont get woken by her every squeek or sucking her hands.

We've always put Mia down without rocking her to sleep or whatever. I think you'll make a rod for your own back doing it like this, as then they cant get to sleep any other way later on. And who wants to be pacing the floor at midnight rocking a baby to sleep?? I dont LOL.

Put him in his own room in a couple of weeks, and start putting him to sleep whilst he's still awake. If you are strict and dont go lifting him up all the time for a cuddle or whatever, he'll put himself to sleep. The sooner you start to enforce this the better I'd say, particularly if you want to get back to work and need as much sleep as possible.

We put Livvy into her own room at 2.5 months, that was when she started sleeping throught the night !! When we were all in one room, we just all kept each other awake. That and she grew too big for her moses basket pretty quick.

Her room is next door and we use a monitor and can hear her fine.

Do you put you little down for naps in the day in thier own room so they can get used to it? Thats what I started doing.

B slept in a moses basket in our room then we put that in her cot in her own room for a couple of weeks after her first injections. Originally we were only going to keep her in our room until her due date as she was born early but I think we should have moved her earlier than 2.5 months as she started sleeping through the night when we did.

We close her door when she goes to bed and have an Angelcare monitor which is not intrusive unless she makes proper noise in the night.

Poble its an interesting observation that you have made, i noticed it too, Neave slept in her moses basket for about 3-5 weeks. I took her to our bed for co-sleeping and all the noises stopped. She slept soundly and quietly all the time she was in bed with us, then there was a time i put her in her moses basket because i was ill or on medication and she made the same noises again and it made all my body twitch and react in a strange way so i took her to our bed again.

She's still in our room. I'm happy with her there theres no need to go against what you think is right and there will only be one thing i ever feel guilty about my methods to date and thats going against what i thought was right and following someone elses method for a night!

Thanks for all your responses everyone - I think we may keep him with us until he sleeps through the night - which hopefully won't be too long as he is starting to go longer between night feeds.
I'm starting to put him down upstairs for naps now that he sleeps longer in the day so that should get him used to the idea of being in his own room eventually.

I cuddled my babies to sleep - i really enjoyed the snuggle up for 15 mins ay the end of the day. All bathed and gorgeous, having a bed time bottle and cuddle in the rocking chair - i think it was a lovely bonding time for me and their dad as we bith took turns.
Anyway, you'll very soon be spending time at that point od the day anyway, reading stories, so you don't just plop them in their cots and buggar off/

At 12 -15 weeks mine were in their own room and it worked v well for us all.
Well dang, I found my original profile and sign in ! Tis me !

I may not always be right.... but I'm never wrong.

I put the twins into their own room at 6 weeks. They slept in their moses baskets in our room at first but I didn't want them to have the shock of going from that to their cot in a new room plus 4 of us in the room was making it difficult to sleep. So we put their moses baskets in their cot for a couple of weeks and then at 10 weeks they were used to their own room so we put them in their cots. Their nursery was right next door to us but I used to leave our door open, their door open and have the baby monitor on lol. I close the doors now but still have the baby monitor on. I suppose I was lucky that they had each other so I knew they weren't alone
