Subject: What's next after a play gym - any recs?
M is bored of his play gym and is pulling it down on top of himself all the time, so time for something new.
Any recommendations?
I'm not too keen on anything too plastic-fantastic / primary-colours-extravaganza clogging up the living room, although that probably limits my choices from the off.
He's 5 months old and has good head control. I was thinking of one of those jumpy swing type things that you suspend from the doorway, but isn't it supposed to be not good for them to be jumping too much on their legs at this age, for fear of a life-time of walking like John Wayne??
Any and all ideas welcome.

Have you tried a Jumparoo. They are a little on the bulky side but my two loved it. I'll definately be using it again

Ooh, I've had a look - I think he'd probably love that. I can only see a Rainforest one. Is that the only one, do you think?
Thanks Snowball!

I just had a look and they do a planet themed one too which looks like it would take up a little less space than the rainforest one

I hesitate to suggest this, because you'll probably hate me forever, but you could try the Vtech Walker. Every parent seems to end up with one of these hideous garish noisy f*cking things but babies do love em. I was given one. You can only use the slab on the side for a while and they're not too big so you can put them away afterwards. I, like you, wasn't going to buy a lurid massive rocker/walker for only a few months' use. They're always on eBay or I'm told at NCT sales. They're actually %&*$# as walkers on a wooden floor as they run away from you too quickly. But you'll have probably condemned the thing to a skip by then.

Other toys she likes is a metal xylophone. It's for 3 year olds, but she goes nuts for it.

A massive tin of wooden bricks.

Stacking cups

Rubbabu bowling set

The Leapfrog cube thing about the world.

Cats, their tails are great to pull.

Other than that, there's nothing that will 'babysit' them for very long and they can play with anything safe really. I am also wary of buying loads of stuff that she'll tire of too quickly. Mine likes to eat books and mobile phones. Playgroups are great for having %&*$# loads of new toys that you don't need to buy, but you may want to wait until he's a bit older as she will suck everything in sight. Perhaps best for just after weaning age.

I'd never heard of jumping being bad for their legs. My baby has loved to stand (aided) since 3 months and I did ask the paediatrician whether it was ok for her to take her weight on her legs and she said it was absolutely fine.

My Amby bed has a jumper attachment but she wasn't keen for longer than 2 mins. And a right faff to get them in and out of it. I never bother with it.

ETA. I think with any jumper thing they have to be able to sit very well unaided, so 5 months is a little on the young side.

I got cory one of these... I swear this was the most fantastic invention.. I used it until his knees were pratically on the floor.. exellent for weaning. Alas it came to the point I had to give it up. I've used my own photo as apparently argos don't stock them now.

I'd say get a jumperoo.. i've never met a baby who doesn't like them but they do take a fair bit of room up. They are fab to pop them into in the morning for 15 minutes while you can have your breakfast.

I would also add that if you choose to do baby-led weaning that provides 'play' time too while you eat. My daughter spends a good half hour at each meal time engrossed in both eating, but also manipulating different coloured and textured foods and developing her fine motor skills. Kills two birds with one stone, really does.

Those lions that sing about sleepyness or something (think they are fisherprice) - they are really easy for the baby to set off.

Another vote for the vtech walker thing

one of the balls that looks like a maze with things on them - easy for baby to grab and to chew on

The jumperoo thing looks fab also.

Things with tags on.

Bricks

Jack in the box. Ok, you have to do it but it often keeps them entertained for ages.

This is a product I could not live without:
http://www.preciouslittleone.com/acatalog/GRBEET.html
My daughter is coming up to 15 months and still uses it. It is a safe place to put her when I need tom leave the room or shower or whatever, and I feed her her breakfast while she sits in it. She uses it as more of a place to sit these days, but from 6 months til recently she would play in it for ages and it really entertained her. I could not recommend this product highly enough.
