It was quite good actually! MrF and I were nervous about it because we didn't know what to expect or what the others would be like... As I suspected we were the only ones hoping for a home birth and wanting to use reusable nappies so we were initially eyed up as 'the hippies'... but then a lesbian couple arrived, which took the heat off of us! [http://community.handbag.com/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif] No, seriously, everyone seemed nice.
A lot of it I already knew from books etc but I did learn some stuff (I never knew not to have the baby in the car seat for more than an hour and a half/2 hours at a time, or that you don't have to wash all the baby clothes before they wear them, just blankets really). It was nice to get out of school for the morning although the room was hot as hell and I nearly cooked... Husband enjoyed it too. Overall, thumbs up to my class. I just wish I didn't have to leave straight after to get to work for the afternoon, as everyone seems to sit and chat then.

yours sounds much nicer than mine,.

we were given a morning of info and then an afternoon looking round hospital, all felt really rushed and u didnt get to know anyone because it was all crammed into one day - moneysaving i suspect !!!

most of my class wanted home births, i felt the opposite, iwas the only one who wanted go hospital

i have read all the books and online and stuff but it was nice for somebody to stand there and explain everything simply.

I've just finished my NCT classes and found them really, really useful. Both me and HB found that spending time just talking about pregnancy, birth and babies helped us as it all seemed so daunting before. We learnt so much and I've already met up with some of the girls from the class which is nice.

We're waivering at the moment with a home birth, although I'm 37 weeks tomorrow so I'd better make my mind up quickly!

My classes sound nothing like yours girls???!!!! I'm getting worried a bit now. I've spent the last 2 weeks doing all sorts of breathing exercises, fanjita flexing and other stuff. Nothing practical has occured, as in getting ready for the baby, washing clothes etc?!!!! They market this as a 'Birth preparation course' so I'm hoping some of it comes in useful.

I've got a 'Partner' lesson in a weeks time when MrS has to come LOLOLOL. I think they will teach him and the other OH"s to do some breathing exercises or something.

Have they taught you positions to give birth in and that sort of getup?

I had two mornings of classes which I dragged OH along to, I'm glad I did now though as he seems to have remembered loads more of the information than I did! We also did a tour around the hospital and birth unit which was about an hour.

The first morning was about the process of labour and the pros and cons of different pain relief options - the midwife said that they don't teach breathing techniques as part of the class anymore as they found everyone forgot them once they were in labour, but I think I would have liked a bit of information on this anyway.

The second morning was called 'Early Days' which was mainly about feeding, and pushing the benefits of breastfeeding, explaining what support was available if we had problems etc. She didn't really explain bathing or changing baby, just said that they would help with this in the hospital.

The hospital tour freaked me out a bit as it really hit home that baby has to come out one way or another in a few weeks time

I'm trying to get us on a hospital tour in a couple of weeks. That should be fun

The practicalities of bathing baby, breastfeeding over here, is done by a health visitor that comes to your house as soon as you give birth, for as long as your health insurance cover dictates. I've already arranged this, but we need to decide on how long we want this women in the house for (as our health insurance pays the full costs, so we dont have to worry about that). She will teach me how to breastfeed/bath baby and all that malarky. It doesnt seem to be something that gets taught to beforehand over here????

When do you start having anti-natal classes, when should I ring and book them?

It depends on your health authority. Ask your midwife next time you see her, or you could call the midwife unit and ask. Ours get booked up months in advance (I had to confirm mine back when we had all the snow at the end of Jan) but other areas are much more flexible.

I booked mine a couple of weeks before the classes started, so it does seem to vary depending on area.
