Subject: Is it ok to lie on your back?
I don't sleep on my back but if I have heartburn / indigestion at night (which I am starting to have quite regularly) I often lie on my back until it calms down and then turn on my side to sleep. Not flat as I have 2 pillows and often prop myself up a bit to help the indigestion.
Also, I often lie on the sofa and read in the evening or watch tv. My head is usually propped on the arms rest so not totally flat.

Does anyone know if this is dangerous for the baby? I definitely do not feel any ill effects from it (I know some people can get dizzy) so sort of feel that if the baby didn't like it I would feel weird and know to move.

Most googled stuff talks about not sleeping on back but some even say not to lie on back at all.

Any ideas???

How far on are you?

They say not to lie on your back as you can feel quite unwell if you stand up suddenly (?).. also they say that it decreases bloodflow to the baby.. you will find once you're in the later stages you won't want to lie on your back.

I always say go with what's comfortable.. you're not lying flat and it's so hard to get comfy when you're pregnant as it is without following all the just lie on your left side gumpf.

I'm between 25 and 26 weeks and find lying on my back sometimes more comfortable than sitting upright......True, it's not totally flat on back, ie my head and often some of my shoulders are on pillows but don't want to distress the baby!

If you find lying on your back comfortable then it's doubtful that its doing any harm.. you may find in say 10 weeks time there's no way that you'll want to lie on your back at all.. your body tells you straight when it's happy or not. If you're not sure then have a chat with your midwife for reasurence... or maybe you could just slip a pillow under your knees when lying on your back so your legs arn't straight out might put your mind at ease.
