Delurking to announce that Daisy Sarah (aka Fidget) arrived 8 days early at 6.46am on 10/10/09 weighing just 5lb13 (not the 8lb plus we were expecting!)
Sorry it's long but wanted to share the positive experience I had.
I was very lucky, I managed to get the home birth that I had planned and it was a really good experience. The contractions started around 1.30pm and I managed to cope with a bath and breathing through them until about 9.30pm when we called the hospital. When the midwife arrived I was nearly 4cms dilated and the contractions were getting much more painful, I had another bath and was examined again and had reached the magic 5cms where you're allowed to start on gas and air, which was a relief!
I spent the majority of the time sitting on my birthing ball watching comedy shows on tv for distraction. I was fully dilated by 5.15am and had an hours rest before they took the gas and air away ready for the big push. Although I was only pushing for half an hour it felt like much longer and was by far the most painful thing ever!! Thankfully I got away with a minor graze to my bits, the perineal gel I've been using must've done the job! And it's true what they say, as soon as Daisy was put on my chest the pain didn't matter.
As my waters broke while I was in the bath there was minimal mess - I didn't get to use the tarpaulin I'd bought lol! The midwives settled me in bed with Daisy after the birth and cleared away everything. We had such a lovely morning after the birth, my husband and I couldn't stop smiling and staring at Daisy. She's so perfect we are totally smitten!
I can highly recommend a home birth (if the circumstances are right) and would definately do it again. My husband wasn't all that keen on the idea beforehand but on reflection he said it was definately the best choice for us and made for a less stressful labour.
