Subject: How soon can I TTC again after miscarriage?

Hi, as detailed in Hello Again..thread, m/c happened this week at 5 wks pg for me.

Went to the GP again this pm, she wasn't that helpful and argued with me about the length of my cycles (they can be irregular), basically saying why did you test early and are you sure u were pg ?!(3 positive tests was what did it for me!) Anyway, after establishing that my bleeding is diminishing and feels quite like a normal cycle, we decided I needed no further tests.

She said I could try again straightaway"if we're to assume it was a normal period" (er...but it wasnt?! It was a m/c).
Now I totally get why waiting is recommended (emotional reasons), but we're quite happy to start again ASAP. Physically, I'm unsure whether it's safe to start trying ASAP and try to get pg in my July cycle, or whether I should wait til after my next period (end July). Any experiences please?

hey mojo, I'm no expert, but I don't see any reason as to why you should have to wait. Thing is though, it will be a bit harder to pinpoint ovulation, and therefore dtd around the right time.

the other thing - do expect bad days, cause more than likely there will be bad days. Give yourself time to get over your loss. Look after yourself. That's the most important thing right now. I'm really sorry things didn't work out for you this time.

I still have bad days every so often, nearly 4 months later (which really isn't a long time anyway), and I expect there to be for quite some time, so just take each day as it comes.

yeah, I had wondered about that, I read somewhere that the date of your m/c is not useful as a predictor of the start of your next cycle.........

thanks again xx

we went for it straight away and I conceived 17 days after the m/c (which had happened at 8 weeks pg)

If you didn't have any intervention, AFAIK you can TTC whenever you feel like it. The doc at the hosp told me to wait one cycle but couldn't explain why it was necessary. There didn't seem to be any medical reason, she made some vague comment about it being 'for me'. I ignored it - I wanted to be pregnant, I wasn't pregnant, and the best way to rectify that was to get pregnant, not sit around feeling devastated that I wasn't pregnant. IYKWIM.

ah..I see!! (and congrats!) I guess there would be sense in waiting to see when yoour next cycle was for dating reasons, but I havent heard of any medical reasons why not to TTC again either......

Mojo - I saw my doc on Tuesday and she said to get stuck in to it again asap.

From what I can glean... the reason the medical profession prefer you to wait is so that it makes it easier for THEM to date your baby. F to the U to the C to the K them!

I'm really sorry to hear about your m/c. If you feel up to it, there is no reason to wait around* - as others have said, the only issue can be pinpointing OV, dating, etc, although your first scan will be able to sort the date out no worries.
I had a 2nd m/c at around 5-6 weeks, conceived the cycle of my m/c (I was using OPKs) and my 5 month old is fast asleep in his bedroom as we speak. In fact, there is one school of thought that says you can be extra fertile after a m/c, although this may just be an old wives' tale. Myself - I figured no harm trying, since we felt emotionally ready. Lucky thing we went for it!

*I only have experience of early m/c - I think they may advocate waiting a bit if you had medical management for a later m/c, but I don't think this applies to you, right?

Ziggurat - you're right, we've both lost them at 5 weeks.

I am very much hoping that I'm "super-fertile" this month and of course my OH is eagerly anticipating double hormones!

that's right Ziggurat, they didnt give me any internal exams. I'm pleased to hear things went well for you ( I remember when you posted after your boy was born!) and I must admit, I feel really encouraged by everyone's replies- thanks!
