We got Mr Chick’s latest SA results back last week, and they were worrying. His procedure to fix a varicocele was last November, and we hadn’t tried re-testing him since because we hoped that the m/c showed we could conceive and it would just be a matter of time. After 7 months with no luck, we wanted to know where we stood, so he got tested again.

It shows that count is excellent but morphology and motility are still low, and now we have the added problem of anti-sperm antibodies, which try to kill healthy sperm on the basis that they provoke an immune response. There is also agglutination, i.e. his sperm clump together, which makes swimming and fertilisation harder. Apparently both can be signs of an infection and we are concerned that having the procedure that was supposed to fix things has actually made the situation deteriorate.

It seems likely that this is why we haven’t had any success since losing our baby, and our odds of conceiving on our own look really short. Our GP has finally referred us to an assisted conception unit, so now we are waiting for a letter with an appointment. I don’t know what waiting lists are like for an appointment, let alone for treatment.

This is another kick in the guts for us. I feel as though new obstacles keep getting put in our way, we never overcome any of them but keep getting new ones which whittle away our chances bit by bit, until we are left with nothing. I don’t know where to turn and feel completely helpless. My mind aches from thinking about it. I just want to withdraw from everything and curl up in a ball.

Hey chick, I already replied to your email from last week, but I just want to show my support here as well. I really do feel for you, and I'm thinking of you.
As I said maybe the referral will take the pressure off a little bit (as it did for me), and I hope it won't be long before you get an appointment.

Not feeling great myself at the moment, but that's to be expected with due date coming up and colleague after having her baby. I'm just going with it at the moment and allowing myself to feel the pain, as I think you should. Let it out, and look after yourself.

Chick, I'm afraid I've nowt to offer on the practicalities you describe, but I do want to send some hugs to you re how you're feeling......

Undecided, you're spot on, you both need time to feel upset for a while. And Chick, I don't want to sound patronising in any way, I can only imagine what it feels like for you, but is there something to be said for finally being able to make the next step to the assisted conception unit? Hoping all appts happen for you sooner rather than later. And you're on the road aged 37, which I guess is more positive than 45 or so?

I know that the above will probably already be in yr thoughts, so I won't ramble on. Wishing you lots of luck xx

I'm sorry to hear its not good news, although at least with some kind of diagnosis you get referred on to the assisted conception clinic. I hope you hear from them very soon and that they can help you both.
