OK, so we've had 'can't send' and 'can't reply', now I've discovered the hard way that I can send pms, and I can receive replies to those pms - but pms to me originated by someone else just disappear into the ether. Please will you fix it?

Got that one too! You still haven't said what you did, but it appears that you're as much in the dark as we are, which is some comfort!!
