Hi, I hope you don't all mind me coming in here and asking your advice. I'll 'fess up and admit it's actually a fan fiction I'm writing atm and 'fess up even more that, yes, I've included myself in it. I know it's not as admirable as writing my own stuff (which i intend to get onto at some point - I'm just glad my fan fic has got me writing again and actually kept me interested/focussed past chapter 2...but I digress!). Anyway, my question would apply whether it was fan fic or not - I just thought I'd give you some background! OK, as I've said, I am a character in my story and the entire thing is written in first person so far from my point of view. However, I'm going to need to write some scenes shortly in which I do not appear. Can I just switch to writing in third person or is it going to jar because 'I' am telling the story (rather than an all-seeing narrator) and 'I' wouldn't have been present in this scenes to know what happened. Does that make any sense? Is it ok just to switch to third person and ignore the fact my character wouldn't know what was going on? Or do you any of you have techniques for dealing with these scenes in first-person fiction! And don't say 'change the lot to third person'!
