Any Chess players amongst us?

Hello, Any baggers amongst us who are partial to a game of chess? I'm desperately trying to improve my strategic skills when playing chess rather than just reacting or playing one move at a time but not being able to see the bigger game plan. Short of just buying "Idiots Guide to Chess" or joining a local chess club - tried that once and ran for the hills shrieking with fear as it was so formal and intimidating, I was just wondering how any of the other chess players out here managed to improve their games? I've also started playing chess online at Online Chess - RedHotPawn.com http://www.redhotpawn.com but am getting thrashed mercilessly and am starting to feel a little humiliated as I have lost all but 3 of my first 15 games. Any advice? Any other baggers that play on Red Hot Pawn? Ta.
I tried to teach myself as well! But I am still really poor and no real clue what I am doing :cmdunno:. I normally use pogogames for matches as you can play the computer or others on the site depending on how I'm feeling. ALWAYS get beaten though :boohoo:Ive also got the standard chess game on my macbook which I use if not connected to the internet. I'm glad im not the only person whos struggling! Im going to get a book, at least this will set out the different strategies to use.

Phew! I was beginning to wonder if I was the only person out that that admitted to playing chess - at school it was always considered boring and "square" to play chess.
I know, its not exactly the coolest of games but I think its fun and certainly keeps the brain running!! how are you getting on? won many matches yet?

Not since I started that thread. I can appear to be doing well and then suddenly I get pummelled from out of nowhere. My rating on RHP at the moment is at rock bottom - I feel very stupid as a result even though I thought I was playing tactically at the time.
hehe, at least your trying something new though! i get thrown so easily and miss really easy moves, suppose though its something you have to learn over time.
