Hi GG, I was looking at that model for my first machine. I went to another store to buy it the day after seeing the offer but they didnt stock it being an upholstry dedicated store as apposed to dressmaking. I ended up buying a sewist model instead for 200 that's able to handle thicker material to make the likes of curtains and cusions (I expect to move in the next couple of years so will find it really handy for making my own and taking up curtains) I was told that its nylon cogs vs Metal parts that set dressmaking and upholstry models apart. Machines with Metal parts can handle the heavier, thicker material. Aside from this, IMO Janome's 1560 is a great first machine - it does stretch stitch unlike older machines and appeared v. easy to use. BTW, John Lewis apear to have a dedicated person in their stores for guidance with sewing machines. They will even train you to use it ... just make a note of their phone number and their on the end of the phone during open hours for any questions you might have. Good luck with your decision. M
