Does anyone do this - I'd like to start with some stuff that's not too difficult like plant pots, mirrors and photoframes. Can anyone recommend a book or a website? I don't know how to get started.

Hey, I've made a mirror in the past but i used the instructions my textiles teacher gave me and a hobbycraft how to sheet not sure if they have them on the website or if you have to go instore for them. Its not all that cheap a hobby that put me off future projects, if you dont get any other helpful tips let me know i'll dig out the how to sheet i know its in my craft cupboard somewhere. You could buy a kit there are different ones out here for different levels their always good to decide if you like something have fun

Quality equipment always costs plus the actual materials were a bit expensive too my mirror project ended up costing best part of 50 and the mirror bit was free and i didnt need to buy equipment It was pretty big and i did use fancy stuff so maybe it was just my expensive taste If you want to price it up try going to hobbycraft or a craft shop/show to get a feel for prices. I'm off to a craft show on the weekend :yay: cant wait!!!!

Hiya, I took up mosaic making last year and love it :yay: The materials are expensive but I've managed to make some money from selling them which lets me buy more stuff I joined BAMM (the British Association for Modern Mosaic) and will be showing my work in their exhibitions, which should be lots of fun! I buy my basic supplies from thecraftkit.com - they are based in Holland but even with the shipping it's still cheaper than buying stuff here. Then I buy more special tiles from Ebay (such as tiles cut from stained glass). I get my MDF bases cut to size for me, from a place just down the road from where I live, but you can easily go to B&Q and get a big sheet of MDF and chop it up yourself with a jigsaw. Make sure you buy wheeled tile cutters rather than struggling with standard tile nippers, it makes life so much easier.... Hobbycraft do huge bottles of PVA glue - you do use a lot of this so it's worth buying the massive bottles! Hope all this helps! Here's a couple of my mosaics....I sometimes use slices of agate etc. as well as mosaic tiles [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/tonibunny/Crafts/Mosaics/Mosaic52.jpg] [http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v28/tonibunny/Crafts/Mosaics/SonataIflashflipped.jpg] Have fun Toni xx

This is something I've wanted to do for ages. I'd like to create 2 mosaics to go outside, possibly for my children with their names on. What would I need to use as a base? Someone told me its worth asking at tile shops for mosaic tiles that they are throwing away (incomplete sheets where some are broken) as apparantly they just throw them away and will sometimes be very generous! No harm in asking! Another idea is to look around car boot sales, flea markets, etc to find old plates, etc to use instead of tiles. I really must get around to doing it!

Hiya Tania I usually use MDF board as a base for my mosaics, unless I'm making something to go outside, in which case I use the slightly more complex "indirect" technique where you stick the tiles down upside down onto brown paper, fix a mould around the edges, pour cement on top and then rub the paper off the front when it's all set. For smaller mosaics just with your children's names on (lovely idea btw!) you could probably get away with buying some large ceramic tiles from a DIY store and sticking the smaller mosaic tiles onto those. Be careful of working with the sort of ceramic/marble mosaic tiles that people use as a border with wall tiles though, because those are a lot thicker than ordinary mosaic tiles and are very difficult to cut. You can buy ordinary mosaic tiles from Ebay quite cheaply though Good luck, let us know how you get on! Toni xx
