I am teaching myself to knit, but have decided that I can run before I can walk:rolleyes: . I have purchased a wrap pattern (so above my ability level it's not even funny) and two hanks of yarn. Firstly do I need to turn the hanks into a ball and if so how? Secondly the site advises that I alternate between hanks for an overall blend of colour - how? I am attaching a piccie of the wool, if it helps. Any advice greatly received.

Saffron. You'll have to unwrap the hanks, then either get someone to hold the yarn while you wind it into a ball, or put it around the back of a chair and do the same. See Here http://knitting.about.com/od/learntoknit/ss/hank_winding.htm As for alternating balls. This is to stop space-dyed yarns from becoming patchy in the way the colour emerges when you knit it up. Work two rows in ball 1, then two rows in ball 2 - strand the other yarn up the side of the work as you alternate.

Before you start doing complicated stuff, get the basics down first. Tedious, I know, but boy will it be worth it. I am quite a fearless knitter, but you should really know your knits from your purls quite comfortably before you start big projects. My first project was a 2 x 2 rib scarf for my mum, an excellent way to practise! I now knit cables and lace patterns. I started knitting in January.

Yup. Once you get the hang of it, it'll be a walk in the park. I have just started cable-knitting, which is very exciting. Lace patterns can be quite difficult and I tend to stick to the easier ones, haha. Good luck with the wrap. Knittinghelp is indeed a fab site if you want to know somehting!
