Do you go to the gym? If so, how often do you go? I go to my local gym every week. I love it! I really enjoy exercising and living an active life. Getting fit is a lot of fun! If you don't go, then do join one and get that blood pumping! Exercise really makes me feel happy & positive. Exercise shouldn't just be about toning up, though: it should also be a way to increase self esteem and fitness levels and increase general energy and mood. I also enjoy walking absolutely everywhere and dancing [silly dancing: not ballroom stuff!].

Sunday is my big gym day and I love it =) I go for a workout and then a 'serious' swim and then reward myself with a nice steam =) other than that I try to run everyday but the weather is putting me off just now. When I first started I really could not be a*sed but when you get into it you really do feel fantastic about yourself! And not so guilty with those 8 digestives... But I really look forward to Sunday mornings, especially as it's one of the few things me and OH can do together as we've got busy jobs.

Hi . There's a pool at my gym too so I try to have a swim once a week, though I missed this last week.

I have a bit of a problem with the gym: I started going about 5 years ago to tone up- I was very skinny (I actually had anorexia) and had no stregnth. I could not run for more then 2 minutes at a time on 7.5KM/H!!

Since then, my weight has shot up. Partly as I am eating healthier then I did back then, but really, I have to say I am clueless as to why its gone up so much! My stomach seems the main issue- its bigger then anywhere else, but I have gotten far larger (think BMI 18 gone up to BMI 25 in two years!). Its very scary for me. I work out 10 hours of cardio a week. (Cardio for me is heart rate average of 155 BPM) I am scared to stop- its gone beyond any enjoyment, I feel anxious between gym sessions as they feel to much for me. But I worry if I don't do them I will balloon.

I would ideall love to be going twice a week and not doing more then a few classes a week, 10 hours plus class work feels excessive. I have no idea how to stop without gaining weight- has anyone else been here?

summer you do a lot of cardio what kind of cardio are you doing and what are you eating for you weight to rise? how much do you weigh? write down your daily intake of food, also take measurements of your body

chest, waist, hips, right bicep, right thigh.

i will be able to help you , 10 hours a week is a lot ! you do not need to be doing so much. what are you goals , fitness? shape? size?

I now go at least three times a week, since discovering I like doing weight training, I tend to do cardio at home or go out on my bike, unless I fancy a swim then thats another visit to the gym for the week.

This is a massive change for me because until a few months ago I had a gym membership for over two years and had maybe only gone a dozen times.

I go to the gym once a week and have fitness classes at least twice a week. The most difficult part was getting into habit of actually going to the gym( I was never a sports person and I'm a bit lazy!) but I love how I can see the results! I feel so much better and healthier - you are right; it's not so much about the looks as the confidence it gives you!
Which gyms/fitness clubs would you recommned? I've recently started going to The Barre in Newcastle ( http://www.the-barre.com/ ), they offer a really good workout which combines pilates with fat burning workout. If any of you lives in Newcastle I'd be happy to find out which gyms you recommned since my local gym will be closing!

Hey- thanks for your reply:
Cardio wise it varies, but I define cardio when my Heart Rate Monitor (Polar F7) goes above 140BPM, its normally somewhere between 145 to 185. I do mainly machines like the cross trainer, the bike, the tredmill, the stepper...anything that can get me that heart rate result. I do interval training for 15 minutes, then walk around a 10-15% gradient, 6.5 to 7km/h pace to get my breath back for 5 minutes, then start again on another machine when I am doing interval stuff. I do that 3 to 4 days a week and up to 2 hours a session. One day I just run outside for 30-40 mins but I have old injuries which come back to haunt me so I can't do that too much. And a final day I do weights 15x3 blocks of about 5 different excercises after an hours cardio beforehand.

My weight? I started out at about 8.5 stone, dress size 6-8, now I am too scared to see the scales. My dress size is closer to 12 then a 10. (I was a 10 least year- as size 8 the year before....)

Measurement wise, arms:just over 11 inches, tops of legs:22inches, calves:14.5 inches waist (this varies at differnt times of the day by anything up to 5 inches!) 31 to 36 inches. Doctors are clueless as to whats going on with my stomach as I get asked if I am expecting by random strangers each day every day. (That STINGS!) They decided it was IBS, but the thing is I have no other symptoms- no pain and etc, just look like I am preggers- the pills also do nothing for me too so I don't think its IBS. But I don't know what else it is. Each month for a while I was losing a pair of jeans- it was scary, its not as fast now (my expansion) but still not great that I'm not losing any weight and do so much. I would hazzard a guess at my weight being somewhere around 10.5 to 11.5 stone.

Food wise: fresh fruit (melon, apple, strawberries, figs etc- I don't eat tropical stuff as its too sweet for me) steamed veg (such as green beans, broccoli, cabbage) I probably eat too much veg, but I think its because I get so hungry- I do eat protein, ham, chicken or quorn with salad for lunch, and then fish, quorn or seafood with the above veg for my dinner. I also drink up to 4 liters of plain water a day (I sweat scary amounts- SCARY amounts!! plus am in the gym alot). I eat 30 grams (sachet) of porridge made with water and also a tea with skimmed milk every day. Calorie wise I add it all up to vary from 1800 to 2000 (I'm counting the vegetables as calories here)- which I know it not weight loss amounts but I would have thought with the hours I put in at the gym that something would happen?

I do want to cut back on the gym, but am so worried that if I do my weight will really start to climb- I am really stuck with that as I get told by professionals (physios) to calm it down or just stop as I have injuries, but thats not going to happen if I know my weight by scientific fact, will go up if I stop burning the calories.

Any help or advice would be fantastic!

Have a look at the Exercise for Weight Loss sticky. Also, I really recommend reading this blog http://www.jagsfitnessblog.com/ - have a look at the Useful Links section for starters.

I think you already know that you have a problem and that you're exercising to excess. It's entirely possible to maintain your weight on maybe 3-4 hours of training a week at most; I've done so successfully for years. Changing your routine to include much more weight training and a couple of sessions of high intensity cardio training will make a big difference.

Read the sticky and have a look at JAG's blog; if you have any other questions after that let me know.

I actually joined the Gym not that long ago, and I must admit that I enjoy it more than I had expected!! Which is interesting, because when I was at school, I hated PE soooo much, that I never used to go. I even got a three hour detention for skipping it LMAO!!!
My problem is that my work (I'm self-employed) is so much like a roller coaster and erratic, that I don't always get the chance to get to the Gym, which is a huge downer
