Subject: Body Pump class
I've never been to exercise classes at the gym before because I've never been fit enough and I'm not co-ordinated at all - think I was scarred by a step aerobics class at school, it was all going so well until we had to move our arms as well :boohoo: So I've been thinking about Body Pump since I know I can manage those moves but I'm still scared to go, I feel like I'll somehow look like a %&*$# going to these things I had a look on the Les Mills or whoever it is site that shows you the moves and explains about the weights and really want to give it a go. They don't do that class in my gym and there seems to only be one place in the whole of Scotland that does it Which makes me more nervous as I have no idea what to expect now! They do a 10 min technique session before one class so I would go to that first. I'm also clueless about what weights I would use for what exercises as they are not ones I do myself and I've never used a barbell weight myself either. Any tips to make me go? :cmdunno:

Don't be scared! You don't need to worry about co-ordination as the class is mostly up and down with weights, so you are either standing or lying on the step throughout most of the class. Personally, I don't think you would need a taster/technique session, you do weights in the gym, you know many of the exercises - the only difference is they use a barbell whereas you probably use either a weight machine or dumbells. The only move you might find tricky to start is the clean and press, but I am sure that will either be on the website or available on the net so you can practice it before you go (I do this when I'm learning a new exercise, practice at home, no weight, in front of a mirror ). As with the weights, ask your instructor. You do weights already so you won't need the lightest weights, especially for legs, back and chest, but you may do for the smaller muscle groups, such as arms and shoulders. Don't be afraid of approaching the instructor, she is there to help and all the instructors I have seen teach pump have been very kind and helpful  Could you take someone with you so you don't feel so nervous? It's always less nerve wracking if there are 2 of you.

Do you want to help me convince Dabs? Which reminds me I'd better find something for the steam room today! I figured body pump would be my best bet since it's the lest co-ordinated class on the timetable and it's moves I know I can handle! I saw the clean and press on the site and it did make me think I'll porbably end up knocking myself over and choking myself with the weight I think a class like this will be a good way of getting me used to using free wiehts in general as I avoid them when I'm alone only prlty because of the blokes but mostly because I'm not confident enough that I know what I'm doing. Do you think the class is a reasonable one to replace one of my weights days with rather than an extra - I would be doing one day of weights on my own, one with the PT and one in Body Pump?

Stella you will love it. The moves are slow and controlled so you don't have to be co-ordinated. I am in Edinburgh and they have classes at Virgin, Greens and all the Edinburgh Leisure facilities. You could go 7 days a week - but don't ouch!! I know Stirling does classes and I have saw a few timetables from through in the West that does it. Where in Scotland are you? Give it a go, you get fab results!

If the instructor is who I think it is, you will really enjoy it! She's a cheeky sod but a really good instructor - I know her from doing aqua for years but I've spied on her doing body pump classes and they looked good. I think you would enjoy them.

Thanks Sunnybears! I'm at JJB's in Aberdeen, they just call it Pump so don't know if it will be theri own version of it  They do a 9.30am on Sunday mornings, wouldn't mind going then if I could handle it after PT session on a Saturday can always move PT session anyway.

Dabs would love it, I promise! If my mum (53 years old) can do it then you girlies can I think you could replace one of your own sessions with it, it would complement the work you do in the gym nicely, and both will help you progress with the other.

I felt exactly the same last Tuesday when I went along to my 1st ever body pump class. The instructor was really nice and he made sure I knew what I needed and made it clear that I should only do what I felt comfortable doing. The other members helped out a lot too as it was clear I was a newbie hahaha! I thought that loads of people would be looking at me and I'd be doing it all wrong, but no one did The instructor helped by giving me tips etc whilst I was going through it, i.e. slow it down here, hold the bar here etc etc. I say go for it!!!! x x

Definitely give it a go! I don't know why so many people say they feel embarrassed about going to something new, everyone had to start somewhere and everyone is looking at the instructor rather than other people in the class! Pump is probably JJB's own version of Les Mills body pump, my friend was a member a JJB a while ago and I seem to remember from looking at her timetable that JJB don't have the Les Mills licence but do their own thing. I don't think the Les Mills website is all that up to date btw, my gym has been licenced for pump and combat for about 5 years but it's never appeared on their search facility. If your instructor is any good you'll be made to do the technique session as soon as s/he spots that you're new - that's how it works in my gym, the 'technique session' is listed on the timetable but in practice it's just the instructor grabbing any newbies before the class and giving them a quick run-through while everyone else is setting up. Since you do weights anyway you'll be fine, the main difference is that it will probably take a little trial and error to suss out suitable weights that are heavy enough to benefit you but light enough to keep going for each track - remember you're not just doing 3 x 12 reps but keeping going for a whole song! Don't worry too much about that for your first go though, just concentrate on getting the technique right at first. Gwan, gwan, give it a try!

Thank you Kayley, that's really helped as I felt exactly the same!

Also very helpful! The Technique class is on a Saturday and I'm seeing PT on Saturday so I'll book for the class on the Following Saturday. Apparently they used to do the Les Mills ones but now the description just says something about worldwide something or other, but I suppose if it was Les Mills they would have to say - anyway that's not so important I was just curious!

Definitely give it a go Stella, I am the most feeble and seriously uncoordinated person ever and I can manage it/enjoy it! Just speak to the instructor beforehand and they'll advise you on weights. Go very light for your first class just to get the hang of the technique and also to judge what weight you can handle given you're using them for a whole song. I've not done pump for ages actually, I really must go back!

Body pump is amazing! its really really good and you will definitely feel the benefits of it. JJb will be doing what my gym did, basically, doing the body pump class to the actual body pump routine, but not paying for the licence so they cant actually call it bodypump. Dont worry about the clean and press, its one of the best moves of the class, i really enjoy the bent over rows aswell...the lunges and squats are the killers, plus the bicep work,so make sure you dont load up your weights too heavy as you do about 50-70 reps with very little rest:faint:

Another vote for going! I may be a freak but I love the squat track and back and legs (clean and press, bent over row and dead lift). I often find I ache more after a Body Pump class than when doing my own weights sessions, but that's probably because you're working the muscle for longer. I've been doing it for years and never really challenged myself with the weights, thinking I was a right weakling. But I've just started really upping the weights as I'm taking all the advice on here about pushing it on weights workouts, and I'm amazed at how much I can manage. It's nothing to be afraid of but the first couple of weeks you'll be getting used to the weights you need to use and the order of the exercises (which it helps to know so you can anticipate what weights you need to swap in/out in between tracks).

Definately try body pump!! I've been going 3 times a week for 2 months now and my instructor has already commented that my body shape has changed so much!! It's great for the legs and arms but you don't get as much tummy work so you might need to add that into your exercise routine, or maybe try a body conditioning or pilates class. I only use 1.5kg on each side for the arm and chest track because I don't want to build any bulk up (and that's been enough to give me good arm definition) and 2.5kg-4kg for the legs tracks. It's said to be the fastest way to get in shape; but if your wanting to lose a little weight aswell I think you should add some cardio in your exercise routine or maybe try a spin class because it hasn't that much cardio, enjoy!!!
