Subject: What do you snack on?
Hi girls [http://community.handbag.com/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/talk016.gif]

So I'm trying to eat better at the moment, just for general health reasons, but the one thing I'm stalling on is snacks. My main meals are quite healthy and always have been but it's my snacks that let me down (chocolate, crisps, etc etc).

So I just wondered what healthy snacks people can recommend to me?

I've been eating a lot of fruit but it's just too expensive for me to keep buying loads of fresh fruit!

Thanks

Try rice cakes- they are quite cheap, you can get a large pack in sainsburys for about 1, and they are filling and low GI - plus you can get tasty salt and vinegar flavour!

Other good snacks are stuff like celery sticks and raw carrots, and low fat yoghurt with an apple sliced up to dip in it.

I tend to have a rice cake or two as a mid-morning snack, raw veg to beat mid-afternoon munchies and my apple and yog before I go to bed. It's best if you try and keep your snack below 100 cal at night though, because it's better for your bodies metabolism.

Finger foods are good because you feel full sooner - Hope this helps!

I eat nuts, seeds and fresh fruit. Sometimes dried fruit but they can be a bit too sugary for my taste.

Also in the evening, I have some dark chocolate.

much the same as me, i roast my own seeds, buy them raw from an online health food stockist in bulk and then they keep for ages, much cheaper than buying in supermarkets!

have you tried the food doctor soya nuts? they're very more-ish!

i rarely eat crisps, i dont find them substantial in the least and if i eat chocolate i generally stick to green and blacks' 85%...mmmm but you dont actually need a lot as it's so rich [and good for you in small quantities! ie dont scoff the whole bar!]

Try to avoid snacks so that your sugar levels can relax back down, even fruit can spike them and get you picking all day. But if you cant live without them then go for low GI foods like vegetables, protein and wholemeal stuff. Also, if you start your first meal of the day with low GI foods then you wont get an ache for sugar a couple of hours later.

To be honest, I couldn't be without my crisps and chocolate. I eat healthy meals and I do snack on fruit quite a bit but what's the point in denying yourself a treat?

It's probably easier for you to buy snack sizes of choc bars or a 2-finger kitkat instead of the bigger ones. That way you get a little taste of chocolate but it's not as bad for you.

I usually snack on fruit in the morning but in the afternoon, nothing but a bar of choc satisfies - it goes very well with my coffee.

Yep, sometimes its best to have exactly what you're craving otherwise you'll have all the 'healthy' alternatives which will just feed the sugar monster and then end up having the chocolate as well! Something sickly can be the best antidote. But after you've calmed the sugar rush down do look at what you ate before you craved choc as that is usually the key.

My snacks consist of raw nuts, berries, tiny portions of dried fruit, fat free Greek yoghurt or quark mixed with a scoop of whey protein, protein muffins, peanut butter cups, an apple spread with natural nut butter, boiled eggs, Nakd bars, oatcakes.
