Subject: From Blonde to Brown DIY Dye - Went a bit wrong!
Hi, hopefully someone can help me,

I have naturally blond hair - which has been highlighted a couple of times. I am not too precious with my hair and have had it professionally highlighted twice and used a bit of sun in a couple of months ago. I am savng up for the hairdresser to dye it dark brown / plum which is going to cost me 150!

In the meantime I thought I would darken it at home. I used Perfect 10 (Nice Easy) in 7 - Dark Blonde (which doesnt look blonde at all, more light brown)

It looks ok - the same colour as the Model in the Calvin Klein Euphoria which is flashing next to me! But some of it, especially the front has got a grey / dull tinge to it. The overall colour the (bf says) is "ash brown" - not the warm caramel colour I imagined. I dont mind it so much, looks quite quirky.... but would have liked it darker and richer.

Its also not as dark as I wanted it - what shall I do? Would it be wise to get another shade and re-apply? Or will it do the same just darker? I suppose because I have never used a dye kit thing before I have no idea whats gone wrong Maybe its because its just for grey hair? theres a lot of talk about grey on the pack!

Any advise would be greatly received?

Hi there Avani, I'm no expert but it sounds like the colour you used Dark Blonde, didnt have enough reddy tones in it, I'm sure when you go from blonde to brown you have to have red tones in first or in the brown colour for the colour to turn out right or you can end up with a khaki greeny colour which could be what the grey/dull colour is caused by...
Probs the best thing to do would be to go to the hairdresser, although if you didnt want to just yet what you could do is buy a dye which has red tones in (the Boots Botanics semi permanent dark mahogany brown is absolutely awesome, ill see if I can dig out a pic of my hair when I used it) I would say only use a semi if youre going to not a permanent and steer away from the 10 minute hair dyes as I havnt heard very good things about the shades matching the colour on the box at all!
I hope this has helped a bit, let me know how you get on and ill see if I can dig out that piccie for you

Hi
I have used two types of 10 minute dyes, first one was loreal excell 10 (chocolate brown) and the other was superdrugs own 10 minute dye (also chocolate brown!)
My natural hair colour is mid to dark brown but I had to blonde streaks I wanted to get rid of
The loreal one came out black when I first did it, although it was very shiney it wasn't the colour I was expecting :-/ it also washed out well quick (I think I liked it after about the 4th wash but it just kept getting lighter till it was back to the original colour after about 2 weeks!!
The Superdrug one came out much more of a chocolate brown then the black ( I loved it!) and the colour has also stayed longer (although I can see that the 2 blonde streaks are now a slightly lighter brown then the rest) I would use this one again and probably would every 6 weeks - unless I also save enough for a hair dresser!!
I also heard that you couldn't go straight to brown from blonde as it might go 'green' (good for halloween maybe? ) but mine was ok and I was just so fed up of my hair I just didn't really care!!!
Have you tried finding a hairdresser that can come to your house to do your hair as they seem to be so much cheaper then going to a salon - and just as good!

Good luck! x
