I just bought some John Freida volumising mousse in the hope that my flat and lifeless hair may develop a bit of body from it. Any general advice on improving the thickness and fullness of hair? Help is much appreciated x

I have had fine, thin hair since puberty and it is the bane of my life! (although much less so as I get older). I always use mousse (currently using the Treseme extra body one) and have tried various salon thickening lotions and creams over the years but to be honest I find them no better than ordinary mousse. I normally use a volumising shampoo and conditioner and I have my hair highlighted as I think it makes my hair look a bit thicker plus the dye swells the hair shaft I think.

Not sure if there's any supplements you could take? I don't bother as I know my hair condition is genetic rather than temporary (my Mum and Grandma both had fine hair) and I'm stuck with it!

You could also try blow drying your hair with a round bristle brush to get some more volume into the roots.

Hopefully some other Handbaggers will have some good ideas as I'd like to hear them too!

I'm sure our beauty ed won't mind me saying she also has fine hair but after testing the new Aussie volume range was sporting a 'do that was positively bouffant. It really made a difference and I know she would recommend it. Plus, drying your hair with a bristle brush gives volume from the roots right through to the lengths.

The lady above was correct in that dye thickens the hair shaft as the hair absorbs the dye effectively bigging it up. Hope this also helps.

Veronica.

I also have quite fine long hair and find that the styling is as important as the product! On the rare occassions I have loads of time to do my hair properly I use a volumising mousse then dry my hair in sections - I use a bristle brush to pull each section away from my head, use the hottest setting of the hairdryer to dry it like that, blast it with the cold setting and then finish with a quick spray of ellnett, still holding the hair in place for a few seconds until the hairspray dries. I do that on lots of separate sections....then have to brush it down at the end cos it ends up too big even for me!!

I agree with Veronica, the Aussie volume stuff is excellent! That and blow drying hair upside down/back combing, but I supoose on the style you want??

Hi, I have fine hair and as i get older it gets thinner! I have used loads of brands but have found the Treseme 24hour volume shampoo and conditioner to be great.

Another vote for the Treseme, have just run out last night so going to try the Aussie stuff for a while so my hair doesn't get used to it (not sure if that is an old wives tale or not though lol)

I don't like the Aussie stuff . . . seems to weigh my hair down too much and seems very greasy on the 2nd day.

Am currently using the John Freida volumising shampoo and conditioner and am quite liking it!

If you have fine hair you will develop your own styling techniques to make it appear thicker. The best advice I ever had was to stop washing it (not completely!) but by washing hair less you don't loose as many follicles. Also you will be blow drying it less as well.

To encourage more hair to grow you could take a supplement and also look into your diet - are you getting enough protein? There's a diet plan for hair growth I found online http://bit.ly/9nLgKH

Dry hair shampoo is great for an instant lift and plenty of mousse when blow drying (upside down!) are great for adding volume.
