* don't wash too often. * condition every day if you don't like the idea of not washing your hair. conditioner washes your hair without stripping it. * don't fiddle with your hair * comb it when it is wet, scrunch and then leave it alone * apply serums on wet hair * apply conditioner and product from the ends to the roots not vice versa. Your hair will need more weight at the ends than the roots * if you have colour, be aware that curls reflect light differently so will look darker than when straight. You may need to have your hair a bit lighter for it to show up when curly * never brush curly hair - use a wide toothed comb * good website http://www.naturallycurly.com/ * be aware that many hairdressers cannot cut curly hair and try find one who specialises in curly hair * look for products in Afro-Caribbean shops - they often stock great products for curly hair which you cannot find anywhere else * be careful of the 'thatched hut' effect if you have a blunt cut bob

Serendipity, these are so true - except I never brush/comb my hair at all, the most it gets is raked through with my fingers when it's wet as it turns into a frizzy wig otherwise! One to add: * curl cream (esp Trevor Sorbie) is a godsend and should be used on wet hair - I find makes my hair less fluffy than serum

I can also recommend Umberto Giannini Curl Friends, Sebastian Potion 9, and Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom to control your curls without crunchiness.

Thanks for the tips, they are excellent. The only one I would beg to differ on is washing. I wash mine every day (although I don't shampoo every day) and it still looks good. Love your curly hair, girls!

so so true! ask for a one length cut with long layers as this suits most curly styles I'm off to get my hair highlighted lighter!

I have found serum to be completely useless - it doesn't smooth the hair into ringlets at all, the results for me are always a frizzy and limp hair disaster area. I've tried several makes with the same result. If you want ringletty curls, comb before you wash your hair (never after as this destroys the natural ringlets), don't bother with conditioner as this just adds weight, then use some sort of creme for curls - I use Tigi BedHead which is the only thing that I've found to work, run tiny bit through with your fingers and then use a glossing product to make the ringlets shine - Having spent years wishing I could have shiny hair like my straighthaired sisters, my hairdresser finally told me about the importance of using this otherwise curls look dull - I use an Aveda one, just a few drops and it seems to do the trick - hope this is helpful - look forward to hearing any other tips from anyone as having curls is a real struggle, you change your hairstyle and no one notices and shaggy perms went out in the 60's...

Another thing that makes me mad about having curly hair is that you can't try different styles because they all look the same. And I can't have a fringe because I lookl like a sheep!

I know that curly hair is hard work but after years of cursing the frizz and then finally resigning myself to the fact that my hair would never be like the average I had a revelation on Saturday and now revel in the fact that I have wonderful curls. I was at a party and there were loads of gorgeous women, all of my approximate age, and I was feeling rather self conscious and a bit of an ugly duckling when I suddenly realised that as gorgeous as they were they all looked the same. Blonde highlights and either poker straight hair or a pob. Now, don't get me wrong, they are all lovely and their hairdos looked fabulous on them but for once I was so glad that with my mane of dark brown curls I stood out from the crowd. Now, even if I could have straight hair, I wouldn't want it! And, back on topic, I use intensive conditioner on my hair to ban the frizz. I just dig out a dollop and work it through the hair when wet, then scrunch and use a bit of serum on the ends. I imagine that this might be a bit to heavy for people with softer curls than me, but I find it works a treat.

Your hair sounds gorgeous! People tell me my hair looks better curly. It took me half my life to realise that - after battling to straighten it for years and years.

People tell me my hair looks better curly, too, but on the few occasions I've straightened it, I've attracted loads of attention from men which I never get when it's curly, so I wonder why this is? Is it because men find straight hair more attractive, or maybe having straight hair brings out my features more which are usually lost in the warm fluffy sea of curls? Interestingly, when I'm abroad I always get male attention with my curly mane so I don't know why men in the UK react so differently.

I've found John Frieda stuff does nothing for my hair at all - my hair is very light and fine and it always looks best when I've been out in the rain and the rain seems to make it form into nice ringlets, which seems to be the opposite to how so many products work which is to keep the moisture out - I've often wondered what texture of curly hair is helped by these sort of products, and if there are products that work to keep the moisture in the hair rather than out of it, or use rainwater in them, as I'd definitely like to try them!

I guess it must depend on the type of hair, i have tried a few curl products and Dream Curls is the only one that leaves my hair looking nice.

I wish my hair liked the rain. At the touch of a single raindrop, my hair goes into one big frizz!

It does seem like products are sold for curly hair when they only work for certain types of curly hair, and are disastrous for other types of curly hair - serums make my hair go limp and frizzy and lifeless, it would save me a lot of money and wasted products if I knew the type of product that would work on my hair by reading something on the label.
