Help with colouring from red to blonde!

My 14 year old niece bugged me for absolutely ages to do her hair dark and in the end I gave in and coloured it for her, but now a year on she wants to go back to blonde!!! I don't know what to do as I'm the only one in the family she trusts to do it and her mum is always working

When was the last time it was coloured? A year ago? Was it a permanent or semi that was used? If she wants to go lighter the best thing will probably be highlights but if theres dye already on the hair and a years regrowth at the roots when you put any bleach on the hair it will take differently depending on whether its virgin hair or dyed hair.
Sooo....I think theres a couple of options (but would be best to get professional advice)
If you highlight it and lift the hair with bleach then go over it with a toner (which I *think* is kinda like a semi) the hairdresser used this technique on me a couplea months ago, she did it like that to make sure the colour was even when it was lifted as I had a few inches of virgin hair and the rest was dyed then she put a toner over it (these were halfhead highlights btw) to tone the blondeness down to a carame colour (Im naturally dark brown and didnt want the highlights to be too blonde but your neice might be different)
My friend who highlighted my hair a few weeks ago however used Matrix colour which lifts and colours at the same time which I found to be a lot better, ummm...not sure how much help im being here lol.
I dont know if buying a permanent dye which is a lighter colour than what it is at the moment would be a good idea because it would be dying her whole head of hair and I dont know how natural it would look but maybe if you took her into a hairdressers and have a colour consultion which are free you could then do what they suggest at home?

Thanks sweetlove, I gave the highlighting thing a go and it worked although there's a slight strawberry blonde tinte to it and I know she desperately wants to go quite a light blonde so I've told her to leave it and we'll see what it's like in a month or so. Trouble is she can be a bit impatient, which is how she ended up with ginger hair last time as she got her friend to do it! Hopefully she'll wait this time!!! Thanks 
hey i am a haidresser and the only thing i will advise is to stop lifting her hair with bleaches or home colours. when you lift hair it throws off warmth this will make her feel more and more ginger. your best bet is to go to a salon where they can lift it properly then use ashen colours to cool it. toners will not do alot maybe cool it slighty but thats all.

I completely agree with the last post. Remeber, Tint won't lift tint. A hairdresser will know the exact % of peroxide to lift if to the desired colour. They'll also 'weave' it through her natural hair to make it look really natural, rather than 'bottle blonde'.

I did tell her that, but her mum won't pay for the hairdressers for her and her dad (my stubborn brother) won't pay because she's her mums responsibility as he's responsible for my nephew. I kind of take over these sort of things as she gets fed up with waiting, might treat her to a trip to salon next pay day......why is nothing straight forward!!
BUT before I saw these posts I did put on a highlighter kit with my friend (who's a retired hairdresser) and it's gone lighter (almost blonde) and have told her to look after her hair (deep conditioner etc) for a few months and not put any colour on products on it so hopefully we'll be able to sort it out in a couple of months.
