Subject: Sun protection - what does everyone use?
I am sure I cannot be the only one who finds high SPF facial creams very heavy and uncomfortable to wear. I just wondered what everyone else uses for protection in the summer months and holiday season and are they really necessary.

Many thanks

I use Chanel SPF 50 on my face, or L'oreal Matte SPF 50 if I'm skint. I've got combo/oily skin and hate wearing suncscreen, but find both of these don't bother me - I've been better than ever at wearing SPF on my face this year as I like what I'm using.

Shisheido do a lot of different suncreams and they are meant to be very good as they're a Japanese brand and they take SPF very seriously.

Been using Bare Escentuals 'SPF30' powder this summer and it's fab! On the Friday of the British Grand Prix we were sitting facing the sun for an hour in the late morning, my son had a red face at the end of the day....and mine was fine

I've just ordered some Ultrasun SPF30 from QVC:

I tried it from a tester pot in John Lewis first and it's really nice & light. You only have to apply it once per day too.
I also got a Shiseido compact foundation which has SPF30. Dunno why but I've suddenly got paranoid about protecting my face!

I love Clinique's Super Cityblock - it's SPF 40 and goes on like a very light moisturiser which is also slightly tinted. It's great for when you maybe dont want to wear any makeup but its also perfect as a make-up base. I apply conclear and minerals over the top and it works a treat!

Sisley do amazing face suntan creams that dont contain too much Titanium Dioxide which means it doesnt leave the skin white. These Sisley products are also anti-ageing so its skin care and suntan protection in one!

I agree with the earlier post about Ultrasun. i got some from tk maxx and think its fab - i use the factor 30 for the face, which is a quite light cream texture. My other half uses the spf 20 sports formula which is a very fluid gel. Lasts all day so although it's not the cheapest, it'll last longer (if you get one in an airproof pump bottle, you can still use it the following year).

i've been using sun protection daily since i was 19. i have used boots soltan for face most of the time cos i always buy them bogof but i have recently decided it's greasier then i'd like. i've tried other brands like ambre solaire for face too but i also find it a bit greasy. jan marini face protectant is good but is too expensive.

when i've holidayed in the far east i've tried lancome sunscreen for face which is lovely and light, but really expensive.

a great find i got recently is neutrogena dry touch sunscreen for face which is not greasy at all, but if you apply too much it can ball up a bit. i usally mix it with soltan and then it doesn't ball up and it stays pretty matte as well. shame it's not available here i don't think.

I definitely agree, I use Super Cityblock too and it's fantastic in every way! I'm prone to spots but I don't find that this causes any increased breakouts. It also seems to have reasonably good sunblock credentials too, as I looked it up on a website that rates sublocks and it seemed to indicate that it does what it's mean to be doing, which is reassuring! I don't think it's too expensive either, because it's only ~12 for a tube and it lasts well (I use it every day) because you don't need a lot. It is also safe to use on the eyes too - big bonus! It's tinted colour is lovely and makes me look nice and healthy. It's effective against both UVA & UVB, which makes me feel very safe!

I also like M.A.C Prep and Prime SPF 50, but it's more expensive than the Cityblock, so I haven't been using it so much since I discovered the Clinique one!! It's a very nice one though and it feels lovely on the skin and leaves everything looking more even-toned and matte. It's also oil absorbing, so very good if you find normal sunblock oily and heavy. M.A.C don't offer very detailed information on the SPF rating and whether it blocks UVA though. The website says it provides 'high-level broad spectrum sun protection' but for me that's not really specific enough. Having said that it definitely stops my skin from burning, even on very sunny days when I'm exposed all day, it's just the UVA which worries me more, because you can't tell if it's working on that front or not!
