Subject: Dark top lip- no hair though? Please help, really embaressed

Hi all,

Have a really embarrassing problem, wondered if anyone had some advice as its affecting me quite a bit.

I thread my upper lip as i have some hairs growing, but have noticed that even after threading, the top lip appears very dark. Its almost as though there is hair under the skin waiting to grow out. I have naturally thick, dark brown hair. So even after the hairs have been removed by threading, the top lip is dark, even two days later.

I have tried to wax the top lip, but it takes ages for the hair to grow back to a waxable length and its too embaressing waiting for the hair to grow to that length. I thought this might help, but no change.

The main issue here is the darkness of the top lip. What should i do? Exfoliating doesn't seem to help much either?

Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone have any advice on how to overcome this. As mentioned earlier, its affecting me quite a bit, feel like i cant talk to people properly as all they're looking at is the dark patch.

Would welcome some advice.

Thanks,

S.

Do you think this could be 'hyperpigmentation' caused by your hormones, sun exposure or as a result of taking the pill? Is it there all the time? There are some fade creams available if you think that this could be the answer. I developed some pigmented patches on my cheeks when I began the menopause and I've had good results from a range of products by Johnson & Johnson called 'Ambi'. Unfortunately, they're not sold in the U.K. I bought mine whilst on holiday in Florida but they may be available online. I have to avoid exposure to sunlight because this makes it much worse - I use a high factor suncream, big sun hat and sunglasses to protect my face.
Perhaps you could ask a beauty therapist to give you an opinion and recommend a regime. I understand that Dermalogica products are effective but I have very sensitive skin so I haven't dared try them yet. Hope you find a solution.

If it is your skin that is actually darker then I think you should try a whitening cream. There are lots on sale in Asian countries but not many available in the UK. You could try a beauty shop in an area like Tooting where you might find some for sale or the one I know of that you can buy in Superdrugs/Boots is called Fade-Out and comes in a day and night version.

Hi smeet

I think that your problem here can have several causes;
some pigmentation which can be caused by hormonal changes (have you started the pill?) it can also be caused by waxing, so it might be an idea not to do that again be careful with any chemicals that you have used as they can dye your skin If you've plucked or threaded, be aware that it could be bruising It could be something called chloasma or melasma, which is very common and is aggravated by the sun. I'd be careful of bleaching your skin too; those products can be quite harsh.

It's sometimes a pain being a brunette(I also have very dark brown hair, black eyebrows and eyelashes), but I suspect that nobody has noticed except you!
