What do you do? There's been so many threads across a lot of the boards that I have got ideas from but I am sure there is more (other than giving up the PC ) Recycle glass, paper, cardboard, plastics, tins Compost things although my current compost solution is yet to be seen if it works Turn everything off rather than leaving it on standby Always wash a full load of clothes Dry clothes outside when I can Take reusable bags for shopping Walk to local places when I can Have a water butt Turn off the tap when cleaning teeth Rip out plastic windows in envelopes so the paper can be recylcled Energy saving light bulbs Turning off lights when not needed I am sure there are a few more that I haven't mentioned that I do, always looking for new tips:)

I've read through all these posts, and I can't see anyone mentioning the best things to do to be green - i.e. not eating meat, or at the very least cutting down on meat and animal produce consumption. I assumed it was because this is so blindingly obvious everyone's already doing it, but some people takl about going to the butchers?

It's been said many times, the simgle most effective thing anyone can do for the planet is not eat meat - the effects of going vegetarian are so widespread it puts energy saving lightbulbs in the shade (boom boom!)

I try to recycle all glass, paper, food but my council dont take plastic bottles

I have written to them in the hope of changing this and fingers crossed.

I think the way to make a real difference is not simply to do your bit but attempt to change the views of others / companies, etc. I once wrote to a local shop asking them to stop packaging apples in plastic trays and they agreed. This would have saved literally thousands of trays which would have taken me years to do on my own.

I recently got back from travelling around Africa and it's really opened my eyes to the food and water problems some people are facing.

It really shocked me. As a result I'm buying less (or buying enough, whereas before I was buying too much and chucking stuff away) and also starting to eat seasonal foods and less meat.

Julie, your proactive approach is inspiring.

It's true about industrialised farming being a massive contributor to climate problems.
I reccomend everyone watches a Farm for the Future

Veganism isn't necessarily the answer as we couldn't sustain a whole nation on vegan diets, as we cannot grow all the necessary proteins, and I'd rather cut down on meat and pay more to eat local, free range animals.

Plus growing of soya, and palm, two huge parts of a vegan diet, are destroying carbon sinks and are a massively unsustainable crop.

Growing your own fruit and veg is a great one.

Also buying wine from nearer countries rather than South Africa, New Zealand, Aus, Chile, etc.

I've switched to using eco friendly cleaning products which are non toxic and bio degradable I feel so much better for not using chemicals on myself or in our environment.
