Subject: Advice please - ex committed fraud on my account
My ex, a bit of a jerk at the best of times, committed fraud on my account by stealing my bank card and running up a huge amount from ATM withdrawals - he had brought my dog through and I had stupidly let him stay in the flat as the pup was ill. Stupid, stupid. ANyways, he stole almost £700 and he did give a statement to the police admitting he did it after I explained that the bank were investigating me for potential fraud. The police didn't take a statement at the time because we agreed to settle it as a civil matter. Well, since then he has been charged with domestic abuse and also cruelty to animals, and there is a restraining order on him until his court date. The police have now contacted me to say that he was detained again by police in his local area (he stays in a different area to where the crime was committed), and his lawyer advised him to give a 'no comment' statement. So they can't charge him at this point. Can anything be done at this stage? Does anyone know??

I'm not sure. If you gave him your PIN the bank won't do anything for you.

Maybe speak to your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Hope it gets sorted, he sounds like a right piece of work

I spoke to the bank and the police when it happened - he had the old pin to my account but I'd changed it...but I've also got an iphone and stupidly set the pin as the same number as my pin for the phone, and though I was quite careful about not giving hm the pin to the card, he might have seen me type the pin in my phone. It's been a few months now, but I'm going to phone the bank again and see what they say.
