Subject: Back ache remedies
Just managed to put my back out, combination of trying to dig the garden over and crouching in front of my laptop for too long, I think Any tips on how to best alleviate/prevent this in the future (and yes, I've been thinking about giving my OH a brand-new shovel for his birthday as a little hint...)

I've had a bad back for years, and the best thing I can suggest is lots of heat and ibuprofen... and whatever you do, DO NOT lie on the floor! (and definitely get you OH that spade!)

Cheers Lady_Witch, will do (and I didn't know about not lying on the floor, I always thought that was a good idea, will stop doing that now!)

Bending and lifting properly will prevent a sprain or even just a sore back. Heat patches for back pain are also available. But painkillers will allieviate a lot of pain. But, again, taking care to bend and lift properly will really help.

If the pain is really getting to you and Ibuprofen isn't helping then you could go to your GP to get the next level of painkiller called Diclofenac. It is an anti inflammatory to will help reduce the inflammation along with your pain. I was having some back problems a few weeks ago and this worked a treat

I find my wheat bag is a blessing when my back is painful, along with anti-inflammatory tablets.

What worked for you Willows?

I keep doing something funny to my lower back, I'm definitely going to have to apply some heat to it I think. I tend to forget that it's good for it, so thank you for the reminder Lady Witch.

Why is it bad to lay on the floor though? My mother's got a bad back too (I'm starting to think it might be hereditary ) and she's been given conflicting advice about do vs. don't lay on the floor...

My biggest problem with laying on the floor with a bad back is getting up again! If you're struggling to bend anyway, then getting up can be a nightmare! My mum did it once, and ended up having to get an ambulance out to help her up!

Also, when you're back is playing up, forcing it to be completely straight (like when laying on the floor) can cause the muscles to over-stretch - making the whole thing even more painful! (at least, thats what I've found over the years... no medical background here )

And yes, dicolfenec is amazing stuff! It's the only thing that keeps me moving most days!
