Subject: If you think you've broken a toe...
...what should you do?

My little toe's hurt and been awkward and painful to bend ever since I walked into that door earlier in the month, but I'm not sure it's worth going to the doctor even if it is, because there's not anything they can actually do about it, is there? The little toe is too small to put a cast on...

The reason why I'm now curious is that a friend told me yesterday he fell up some stairs earlier last month and hit a toe really hard, and it's hurt ever since too. (He told me off for not going to the doctors, but he hasn't either!)

Is there something we can do to help the affected toes get better, or is just strapping it up carefully the best we can do?

Hm, I would tend to have it checked out by a doctor anyway, just in case it isn't broken and something else. There are several herbal things like comfrey to help the bone heal more quickly.

I broke my big toe quite a few years ago, didn't realise it at the time so went to A&E, had an x-ray, and was told that they don't put toes in a cast.
I had it strapped up and was advised to rest it as much as possible, it was Christmas eve so the resting didn't happen lol

If it's still painful then it would be worth getting it checked out, just in case.

Willows, I'll definitely try the comfrey! As to seeing a doctor, it takes three weeks for an appointment at my local surgery and then even longer for an X-ray referral for something non-vital like this, so... I'm a lazy person, I think! (We get a great service for potential emergencies. Non-emergencies, not so much...)

diammie, that's what my mother said too, about how they don't cast it and strap it up instead. I've been trying to rest, but like you, Christmas does make it problematic! I can bend the bottom joint so it's not so bad now, but bending the middle one still hurts. If strapping it up is the best they can do, then I'll do it myself...

Aestivalis, how's it going? Has strapping it up helped at all?

It feels a bit better. It's still a bit painful to bend so I try to avoid it but luckily I don't think we need to bend our little toes that often. Hopefully it'll be alright soon.

That does remind me I need to redo my strapping though... Does that drive anyone else mad - when something you've strapped or plastered comes slightly unravelled and sticks to your socks / clothing?

Yes, hate that - and most of the time, you end up having to do the same thing all over - hope you're healing well x

Dearime, dogs do have some strange ideas - reminds me of my friend who just had her knee operation, and another friend's St Bernard decided to greet her sitting on the sofa - by jumping up on said knee... ouch!
