Subject: Kindle recommendations?
Just got a Kindle for Christmas, and been trawling through the "free" section of Amazon (only 4,835 books to choose from...) - any recommendations for that? And are there any other places I could buy e-books for the Kindle from?

How did you find the kindle, Willows21? Is it a good replacement of paper books?

The Amazon 'Free' section is dizzying, isn't it? You start to get book-blindness after a while... I love that it's a great place to snag some of those out-of-copyright books you've always wanted to read though - I got four of the "What Katy Did" books I read as a kid which was both surprising and nice. I think I saw some Jane Austens there too.

I'm not sure about other places you can buy Kindle books from - I know you can only download them wirelessly to Kindle from Amazon - but you might want to look up Project Gutenberg, which has free out-of-copyright books you can download and copy across to your Kindle with the USB cable. I've started trying to teach myself Latin with a book I found there. Lots of things to choose from there too!

Can you do that once you've registered your Kindle?

Yes, you can. I've actually had a hard time convincing mine that I DON'T want to copy data across, I just want to charge it! I've never pirated ebooks so I don't know if that would have any issues, but the Gutenberg books all work fine - most of their books have an option to download in a Kindle-compatible format too. I'm reading a couple of them right now.

Thanks everyone, I think I'll actually dig it out again - I did download a few "free and old" books off the Amazon site, but still find I'm more drawn to my "real books" - might change when I go on holiday with it

I've yet to explore the world of the Kindle!! But a good author to read is Charles Dickins and Emily Bronte. The classics aren't called classics for no reason! You don't necessarily have to choose "Great Expectations": you could choose "Pictures Of London" or "The Bleak Old Shop Of Stuff". You could even attempt to read "War and Peace" and "Crime Or Punishment". It's up to you!
