Subject: Not sure what to say...
Hi guys,
I've just had a text from a friend, telling me that another friend of ours has had to have a tumour removed. He hadn't told us in advance that there was a problem, and he now has to wait to see if its malignant.
I'll be seeing him on Wednesday, and I'm really not sure how to act. I don't know if he asked our friend to spread the news, or if it was a 'pre-emptive warning' so to speak. But either way, do I pretend I don't know, ask him about it, or what? And how do I avoid bursting into tears the moment I see him (as I did when I read the text message :P )

You poor thing.. that must have been a shock.
In your shoes personally.. if they were a good friend.. I would pick the phone up and ring and tell him that I know and want to give him some support. Don't wait until you see him...It doesn't matter how you know.. just that you do. It's likely that he's scared out of his mind atm.

I would ask the person who tod you if the information was given to you at the instruction or with the knowledge of the person who had the operation. i.e. Did they want you to know, this way you will know better how to deal with the situation tomorrow.
