Subject: High anxiety levels
Well I don't want to say "blame it on the parents", but I was brought up by a couple of very anxious individuals, who wouldn't let us go anywhere or do anything for ourselves much for fear we'd get run over/a brick dropping on us/abdcuted by aliens. I managed to cope quite well once I started going out to work etc., but recently I find that anxiety, and the feeling of "I just don't want to go out" creeping back in. Has anyone got any experience or tips on how to combat this?

I have really bad anxiety even though I'm 17 and i'm outgoing! So I understand were your coming from with my mum having bad anxiety. You may find this to be silly but chakra meditating is so good for anxiety, get a audio cd or a audio to put on your ipod and listen to it in the morning and she asks you to take away all your bad energy and I find it to help so much, I mainly suffer with it at night before I go to sleep and so I listen to Benjamin Bonetti- better health relaxation hypnosis audio programme. Which makes me sleep, and even when you sleep your subconious mind takes in everything he says so you wake up feeling better!

I hope this helps you

I had much the same kind of upbringing and I used to use those herbal remedy things to try to help. In the end though, I used to get so frustrated at myself and my fear - I absolutely hated that I wanted to go somewhere but couldn't bring myself to do it - that I got angry and just made myself go. I sat on buses having very quiet panic attacks and telling myself in my head to get over it.

I still haven't to a certain degree (I'm currently finding excuses to avoid driving into town), but of all the things I've done, pointing out to myself what I'd miss if I didn't do it seems to be helping - so it's my decision to go out or stay in, not my fear's or anything I've taken...

That sounds a wonderful idea, Alanasecret, thanks for suggesting meditations, I've been thinking about that myself - is there any particular CD you would recommend?
Also Aestivalis, I think that might be something to try - just go out and see what happens, it IS my decision after all (now where's my Rescue Remedy...)

ive also heard meditation helps with anxiety.

I have had bouts with anxiety and if (for example) its around people I just imagine their faces being cats or dogs. Once you paint a silly enough picture youll just laugh at yourself and forget about your anxiety hehe
