"Free" software alternatives

I just stumbled across the totally free "Open Office" software, which I find just as good (if not better) than the Microsoft Office suite. I was wondering if there's any other free alternatives out there?
I love OpenOffice! 
I only have Office Starter on this, which is the irritating, ad-filled version of the full program (that I still had to pay for since Dell don't let you just not have Office at all any more...) so OpenOffice is pretty much my saviour.
As to other kinds of good free programs, it depends on what kind of program you're looking for, I think. Is there anything in particular you're looking for?
